PRE-THANKSGIVING SUNDAY POST

Hey,

A couple of things this morning. I’ve been grappling with this for several weeks, but now some of the elements are coming together. At a meeting a couple of years ago, a friend mentioned a Belly Tank Bonneville project, and I was intrigued but couldn’t go there. Belly Tanks from WWII are used by hot rodders and land speed enthusiasts in four-wheeled configurations. I’m a biker.

I got to thinking, though. Why couldn’t we build a CanAm styled trike. I called Dennis Manning and asked about a trike class. “If you’re going to build a trike, let’s start a class,” Dennis said, and so it was. But my trike team didn’t make it that year and we lost touch with our Belly Tank connection. We also thought they were rare as hens’ teeth.

Then, about six months ago, I met Michel, one of the principles of Campagna trikes. They build high quality trikes capable Corvette handling characteristics. Michel was intrigued with my notion and offered a frame and front end clip. Then I had dinner with Dan Stern who owns Thunder Road Harley-Davidson in Morgan Hill. He showed me some images of a custom project. It contained a sidecar. He made a mold for this very art-deco, aerodynamic sidecar body, and once more I was intrigued. Could we build a trike streamliner?

I like working with the best in the business, over trying to make everything myself. I like a team effort, besides I don’t profess to be Wink Eller, or some master craftsman. Since we’re not sure Dan’s body will work for what we are doing, we continued to look for Belly Tanks, plus a couple of our team like the old school traditional, historic aspects of working with a Belly Tank. I recently reached out to Rodan, a former retired SCTA official, and he scored a company, Class Glass and Performance. They build Belly Tanks in two sizes. So there you have it. I let the cat out of the bag to Cantina Members first. Can we build it? I’m turning 65 next year, and hope to ride this puppy myself. It’s a two-year project. And right now we are considering powering this beast with a JIMS 135-inch Twin Cam engine.

I’ll hold onto the next subject for the end of the news:

BIKERNET Church Ladies With typewriters–
They’re Back! Those wonderful Church Bulletins! Thank God for church ladies with typewriters. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services:

The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.

The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus Walks on the Water.’ The sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus.’

Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.

Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say ‘Hell, to someone who doesn’t care much about you.

Don’t let worry kill you off – let the Church help.

BE WARY OF E-15 ETHANOL LACE FUELS–
“E-15 gas makes its debut in Nebraska,” Oct. 24: With E-15 — fuel containing 15 percent ethanol — now available in Nebraska, there are a number of risks of which customers must be aware.

In an effort to meet ethanol-blending requirements established by the Renewable Fuel Standard, the Environmental Protection Agency has ruled that E-15 can be used in vehicle models 2001 and later, disqualifying 40 percent of cars on the road.
But tests have shown that one in four vehicles approved by the EPA for E-15 were damaged or failed completely on the fuel. Consequently, a number of car companies are warning new-vehicle owners to steer clear of E-15 or risk voiding their warranties.

E-15 is not safe for heavy-duty vehicles, no matter the year, nor is it appropriate for small engines such as those in leaf blowers, lawn mowers, motorcycles or ATVs.

Consumers also should be aware that ethanol contains less energy than gasoline — 33 percent less to be exact. Drivers using higher ethanol blended fuels will notice that their vehicles get fewer miles per gallon, and they can expect to visit the gas station more frequently.

The EPA’s decision to allow E-15 in the market to meet arbitrary federal biofuel mandates before establishing proper consumer protections was imprudent. Now that it’s here, maybe E-15 pumps should be labeled “buyer beware.” Customers must be warned of the risks and costs associated with E-15 use.

SMA POWERS ELECTRIC MOTORS ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE Breaks Land Speed World Record–Sunny Island Inverters Used in Mobile Charging Station to Fuel Record-Breaking Ride

ROCKLIN, Calif., November 16, 2012—A new land speed record for electric motorcycles was set over the weekend with a vehicle from Lightning Motorcycles, the leading pioneer in electric motorsports. The Lightning SuperBike, the world’s fastest electric motorcycle, was powered by a DC Solar Solutions Solar Eclipse mobile power unit featuring Sunny Island inverters. It reached a speed of 189 mph to break the previous record set at El Mirage Lake bed in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino, Calif.

“We are passionate about promoting alternative energy and are excited about having this opportunity working with SMA,” said Richard Hatfield, owner of Lightning Motorcycle. “We believe people interested in electric vehicles are also attracted to powering them with clean solar power.”

Although Lightning Motorcycle has won multiple international racing competitions, this is the first time the organization has raced at El Mirage to set a new world record. The previous world record speed set at El Mirage was just over 170 mph.

“This event is a testament to how far electric vehicle and solar technology has come,” said Henry Dziuba, president and general manager of SMA America. “It is a thrill to see solar energy powering record-breaking vehicles, and it was a pleasure working with Lightning Motorcycle and DC Solar Solutions to achieve this great goal.”

SMA partnered with DC Solar Solutions to power the Lightning SuperBike. DC Solar Solutions designs, manufactures and deploys mobile solar generators to provide clean, alternative power. One of its mobile solar generators was on site, using two Sunny Islands to charge the Lightning Motorcycle vehicle prior to its record attempt. DC Solar Solutions’ mobile solar generators require no fuel, are noise and emissions free and reduce harmful carbon emissions.

“DC Solar is committed to innovation in renewable energy and providing the best solutions to its customers,” said Paulette Carpoff, vice president and owner of DC Solar Solutions. “We know SMA shares that same commitment to quality and reliability, which is why we chose to use SMA inverters in our mobile solar generators.”

The Sunny Island is SMA’s battery-based inverter for off-grid and backup power applications, offering exceptional efficiency and reliability.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION Breaking News!–The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released there 2013 “Top Ten Most Wanted List” Wednesday, November 14th 2012 reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF).

The list is a collection of the NTSB’s top safety priorities. Recommendations are made to governing bodies and industry. Typically the list reflects recent concerns of the NTSB, for instance in a year where there are a lot if motor coach crashes you could expect to see some recommendations to governing bodies to screen drivers better and to industry to make the buses safer.

Most recently motorcyclists made an appearance on the list. In 2010 the NTSB took aim at motorcyclist safety and recommended that each and every State institute a mandatory State helmet law. It’s important to note that the NTSB’s recommendations are put into place 96% of the time. The MRF met with the staff and Members of the Safety Board aggressively over the following year to educate them on a comprehensive approach to motorcyclist safety. It worked, the following two years (’11, ’12) the motorcyclist safety portion of the “Top Ten” was two fold. They recommended volunteer helmet use and just as importantly to them, a strong emphasis on crash prevention.

This coming year’s list does not contain any motorcycle or motorcyclist recommendations whatsoever. They have recognized the work that is being done at the National, State and Local levels is working. Motorcycle fatalities are still less than they were four years ago. They recognize the fact that proper education and awareness programs work. The NTSB realize they have more pressing issues that they need to focus on and that the motorcyclist safety is in good hands, the right hands, the motorcyclists of Americas hands.
NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman “Safety areas are dropped from the list when meaningful progress has been made.”

Read the 2013 NTSB Top Ten list here: http://www.ntsb.gov/safety/mwl.html

The NTSB is an independent government agency charged with determining the probable cause of transportation accidents and promoting transportation safety, and assisting victims of transportation accidents and their families. Formed by Congress in 1926 their original charter was to investigate only airline and airplane accidents. In 1967 that charter was expanded to include; marine, pipeline, railroad and highway modes.

So, what about the NHTSA, or the DOT? Here’s another example of too much government.–Wilburn Roach

WHEELS THROUGH TIME RAFFLE WINNER–Beautiful blue skies and warm greeted a crowd of over 2500 visitors from near and far made their way to Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley for the museum’s 8th Annual Raffle Giveaway this past Saturday, November 10th, 2012! This year’s grand prize drawing for the beautiful 1932 Harley-Davidson VL Flathead Bobber restored at Wheels Through Time was won by James Eldridge of High Ridge, Missouri!

Each year, the museum holds the drawing during the Annual Haywood County Toy Run. Put on by the local Blue Ridge Thunder Motorcycle Club, the run collects both toys and donations to benefit underprivileged children in Haywood County, and since its inception, has raised almost $150,000 for its cause. This year marked the 9th year that the museum has hosted the Toy Run, and when results were tallied up, over 1200 motorcycles participated in Haywood County’s largest annual motorcycle gathering.

As the Toy Run festivities came to a close, Blue Ridge Thunder Event Coordinator Cecil Yount handed the microphone over to museum Curator and Founder, Dale Walksler, for the much anticipated drawing for the 1932 Harley-Davidson Flathead Bobber. Silence quickly fell over the 2500+ specators, as one young lady from the crowd was chosen to draw the winner.

The 10th Annual Museum Raffle Grand Prize Winner was Mr. James Eldridge from High Ridge, Missouri. After numerous attempts to call Mr. Eldridge via telephone, Dale finally got in touch with his wife, who had to call her husband’s cell phone to get in touch. At first, Eldridge didn’t believe he’d won the machine, but after a minute on the phone with Dale, it finally began to sink in.

BAD DRIVER FILES NOW OPEN–An Arizona dump truck driver convicted of numerous charges for the 2010 deaths of four motorcyclists has been sentenced to 26 years in prison.  Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Welty handed down the sentence Friday afternoon.

Jurors returned guilty verdicts against Michael Jakscht (Jacks) on charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault and endangerment after an August trial.

Jakscht plowed his 12-ton truck into a group of motorcyclists stopped at a north Phoenix traffic light on March 25, 2010. Four motorcyclists died and five others were injured in the fiery accident.

Phoenix police said toxicology tests showed Jakscht had methamphetamine in his system. Jakscht’s attorneys had argued that he had taken diet pills and that the brakes on his truck weren’t working well.

BIKERNET GUN LAW COMMITTEE REPORT–U.S. Senator Moran Reaffirms Senate Opposition to U.N. Arms Trade Treaty

As we recently reported and warned would happen, following the election, the Obama administration moved forward with its plans to support a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. On Wednesday, November 7–the day after Election Day–the U.S. Mission to the U.N. made clear its support for renewed ATT negotiations, casting a vote in favor of a resolution that calls for a “Final United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty” to be held in New York City from March 18-28.

In response to President Obama’s acknowledged intent to resume negotiating an ATT, this week, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) reiterated the grave concern that he and fellow pro-gun senators have regarding the dangers posed to Americans’ Second Amendment rights by a U.N. ATT.

In a press release on Thursday, Moran said, “On July 26 of this year, 50 of my Senate colleagues joined me in sending a powerful message to the Obama administration: A U.N. Arms Trade Treaty that does not protect our firearm freedoms will fail in the Senate.

Our bipartisan warning to President Obama and Secretary Clinton demonstrated clear and sufficient opposition to ratification of a treaty that in any way restricts the rights of law-abiding American gun owners. When the U.N. Conference dissolved this summer without a treaty, it was clearly a positive conclusion for American gun owners and I’m glad we were able to steer the Administration toward this outcome.”

ERIC HERRMAN’S LATEST PAINTING– latest painting “Lookin Back” profiles 40 years of riding and living!–With a scene that’s split down the middle Eric looks in to the changes we’ve experienced from the ‘70s to the present time.

Vietnam was winding down in the mid ‘70s and it was “Peace & Blues”. Choppers with long front ends, beer, wine, weed, Jimi Hendricks, and Lava lamps.

Now it’s big tire baggers, sex, and drama, texting from coffee shops, Ibuprofen, Viagra, and Tattoos. In the ‘70s we would never have worn shorts and red gym shoes while riding. Notice the rider’s shirts with NAM ‘73 and Remember 911. The long hair and bandanas have been replaced with shaved and balding heads. It’s been a long ride since those simpler times, but we’re still riding!

The original “Lookin Back” painting measures 30” x 38” and is available for $22,000.00. Painted with acrylic paints and a brush, Eric spent five months painting and researching this image. “Lookin Back” is available as a limited edition Giclee’ print on canvas in two sizes.

Edition of 100 30” x 38” custom framed $2500.00
Edition of 400 22” x 28” gallery wrapped $850.00

UMCQLD IN AUSTRALIA says Church should be declared Criminal Organization–The United Motorcycle Council Queensland Australia has issued a press release through their spokesman Russel ‘Camel’ Wattie comparing the current scandal surrounding the Catholic Church and the cover-up of children abuse by the church, police and the media with the law and order hysteria meted out to motorcycle clubs by the very same mainstays of law and order.

It is with iron clad assurance that I can state there are one ‘collective’ group of organizations that will not fit in to Catholic Archbishop Pell’s “It wasn’t just the Catholic Church that hoped (an abusive priest) would amend their conduct and give them a home somewhere else”… and that is, Three-piece Patched Motorcycle Clubs. This I can state with absolute knowledge, that this type of behaviour would not be tolerated by any Patch Club.

Unlike the Catholic Church, and unfortunately the Archbishop Pell is correct as we know the Anglican Church and the Exclusive Brethren have all conspired to cover up Paedophilia within their Churches, and there can be no doubt that other organizations have done the same.

The open letter from Senior Detective Peter Fox to Premier Barry O’Farrell clearly makes the allegation, “I can testify from my own experience that the church covers up, silences victims, hinders police investigations, alerts offenders, destroys evidence and moves priests to protect the good name of the church,” it is similar claims against Patched Motorcycle Clubs (not Paedophilia, but silencing witnesses, hindering police investigations, etc;) that sees legislation brought in that has so far proven to be unconstitutional, to have them declared Criminal Organizations.

As yet there has not been a politician with the testicular fortitude to suggest that the Catholic Church is, under the definition of Criminal Organization within the various acts, is in fact a criminal organization and should be treated the same way as Motorcycle Clubs.

Why is there limited reporting? Why, is there no computer generated link showing the ‘family tree’ linkage of these paedophile Priests, the Diocese’s, the Order’s, scale of the cover-up and the lies that are slowly being uncovered? Why has it taken so long to get only this far, the world has known about the link between Churches and Paedophiles for decades, the power of the churches over our political and judicial system needs to be undone. Why had there been no use or even a suggestion of the use of the ACC, CMC or NSWCC’s coercive powers? A Royal Commission is the only place to start, but this needs the media to stop hiding the horrific truth by under reporting this heinous crime group’s activities and start doing their jobs in an honest, open investigation.

There is in-fact more evidence to support conviction of the Catholic Church under these unconstitutional laws than any Motorcycle club. Did our solders’ fight and die to allow Churches to control our legal & political processes? Did our solders’ fight and die to see our freedoms taken by our own politicians, the very freedoms that they gave (and continue to give) their lives fighting to protect, for other countries citizens?
“Lest we forget “

The United Motorcycle Council of Queensland is a peak group representing 16 motorcycle clubs from around Queensland. Membership is also open to individuals.

The council has been formed to provide clubs and individuals with an avenue for dispute resolution. It also aims to break down some of the negative stereotypes about motorcycle clubs and members, and allows bikers to have a say in issues that affect them.

CELEBRATING MOONSHINE HISTORY–
DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Moonshine distillers are making their first batches of legal liquor in this tiny Georgia town’s city hall, not far from the mountains and the maroon, orange and gold canopy of trees that once hid bootleggers from the law.

A handful of moonshine distilleries are scattered around the South, but observers say this is the first they’ve ever seen right in a city hall. The distilleries come amid an increased interest in the U.S. for locally made specialty spirits and beer brewed in homes and micro-breweries.

The Dawsonville moonshine makers and city officials say the operation helps them preserve a way of life. It also carries on traditions from an era when moonshine meant extra income for farmers, medicine for their children and helped fuel the beginnings of NASCAR racing.

“Dawson County was, sure enough, the moonshine capital of the world at one time,” distiller Dwight Bearden said as he checked on the still where the third batch of Dawsonville Moonshine was being prepared. “It was just a way of life back then.”

The clanking of the still and the smell of corn and alcohol fill the room several yards and a few interior walls away from the offices of the city clerk, the mayor and other officials running the town about 60 miles north of Atlanta. The city leases the space to the distillery.

Outside city hall are old, abandoned cars from the days when Ford Coupes and other models from the 1930s and ’40s hauled moonshine down Georgia Highway 9. The windy mountain highway became known as Thunder Road, because it was filled with the screaming sounds of car engines as bootleggers hauled their moonshine to Atlanta.

The young drivers were sometimes pursued by “revenue men” from the federal government, and the chases sometimes led to overturned cars and deadly wrecks. Townspeople are proud of how young Dawsonville men raced their cars at places like Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta after moonshine deliveries, which helped stock-car racing gain a following in its early days.

Today, cars on Georgia 9 slow for school zones on their way through Silver City and Coal Mountain — two of the smallest communities from Dawsonville to Atlanta — and the suburbs of Cumming, Alpharetta and Roswell farther south.

Inside the distillery are plenty of reminders of the days when moonshine was made in the surrounding foothills.

Entrepreneur Cheryl “Happy” Wood points with pride to a portrait of her grandfather, Simmie Free, hanging on one wall.

“Mama said, ‘When you get this going, I want you to hang this up,” Wood said.

Free learned how to make moonshine from his father, who learned it from his father generations ago, she said.

“We grew up around it, and it was our medicine,” Wood said. Cough medicine was among its medicinal uses, she said.

Bearden, 56, recalls how extra income from his family’s moonshining helped feed him as a child, and often meant a better Christmas if sales were good.

There are a handful of other moonshine distilleries in Southern states such as North Carolina, but officials from state and national groups say they aren’t aware of any operating in a city hall.

“That’s a new one for me,” said Gregory Minchak, a spokesman for the National League of Cities.

J. Katie McConnell, senior associate for economic development at the League of Cities, has been studying the craft beer industry in recent months, and how small breweries and distilleries have sprung up and expanded in many communities. In Washington, D.C., for instance, the city’s first gin distillery in more than a century opened this year, she said.

Wood has been planning the distillery for about five years. As she searched for a site, she and city officials began to realize that city hall would be an ideal spot, Dawsonville Mayor W. James Grogan said. The idea was that the distillery would tie into the city’s history since it would be right next-door to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Museum, Grogan said.

The distillery has reached several key milestones this year.

Last week, the distillery was delivering the second batch of moonshine it’s made to its distributor, which has orders from liquor stores and other businesses around the state. Georgia law prohibits the distillery from selling its liquor at the site, but allows a distributor to ship it to stores with a liquor license, where it can be sold legally.

Wood recently got approval from state officials to offer small samples for tourists to taste.

State Rep. Rusty Kidd of Milledgeville, who introduced that bill during the most recent session, said Thursday he believes there will be more legislation during the upcoming session that would allow the Dawsonville distillery and others in the state to sell a single bottle of moonshine to tourists who want to take one home.

The samples will be offered on a counter made from wood cut by one of the distillery’s employees, Bob Suchke of Dahlonega. Tin covering the front of the tasting counter came from an old barn, Wood said.

Locally made and locally grown products are a key aspect of the business, she said. A batch of apples fermenting last week came from the north Georgia town of Ellijay, about 30 miles away, she said.

The local movement has been a successful one in north Georgia, where several vineyards dot the mountain landscape and offer tastings of wines made with locally grown grapes. In Blue Ridge, at least one apple orchard brews and bottles its own apple and peach ciders.

Corn used by the distillery is also grown locally, and the distillery sticks to authentic recipes and doesn’t use any sugar, Wood said.

“This ain’t sugar liquor,” she said, “this is the real deal.”
