ROLLIN SIXES AND BIKERNET CHRISTMAS T-SHIRT AND PRESENTS FOR THE TROOPS DRIVE IS UNDERWAY– A Vet brought it to my attention as I was making a knit hat for a chemo victim, that our soldiers involved over there would like a hat to keep a little warmer this winter. I agreed and started making some in more muted colors. I’ve been following what you do for our folks in the military and I don’t have shop shirts to send, I have some Q.s maybe you could help me answer.
1. Do you think knit hats would be o.k. to send with the shirts?
2. Could they wear hats, safety/being a target?
3. Should I worry about the colors of the hats that much?
4. How would I get them to you?
5. I only have about 30 made how many do you think I need to make?
I unfortunately have been disabled after the tumors/chemo tried killing me too many times and I have very little funds. Paying the mortgage and the electricity is gonna be a bitch this winter. I get the yarn as donations for making the hats.
I would also like to take this time to thank you and your staff for sending me a X-mas present a couple years ago when I was eyeball deep in chemo, E.R.s and doctors cutting chunks out of my chest, it gave me something else to think about and to look forward to, and I liked “Orwell”, the wallet I always carry, and “The Worlds Fastest Pan” posters– it was all sweet. Thanks again for keeping my brain out of the weeds!

MAJOR SHAKE-UP AT CYCLE WORLD MAGAZINE– Hachette Filipacchi is shaking up management at the Cycle World franchise as part of an ongoing overhaul of the company’s publishing structure. The reorganization brings a number of changes: Executive Editor Mark Hoyer has been promoted to president of brand content and editor in chief — replacing the previous EIC, David Edwards, who is leaving the company. Paul LaBella has been named vice president and brand publisher. Previously, he was national advertising director. Corey Eastman, previously marketing director for Cycle World, was given the role of vice president of brand development.
There’s more fallout at Hachette Filipacchi Media as president and chief exec Alain Lemarchand continues to roll out his brand-centric approach throughout the company.
The latest involves Cycle World, where vp and editor in chief David Edwards will be leaving the company after 25 years there. Executive editor Mark Hoyer will replace him in the new role of vp, brand content and editor in chief.
Cycle World, along with Hachette’s car titles, is what’s left of the company’s men’s titles after it sold five enthusiast magazines to Bonnier Corp. earlier this year. Speculation has persisted that Hachette’s French parent plans to get rid of all its U.S. titles and publish the American Elle through a licensing agreement, although Lemarchand has said he’s committed to growing the U.S. titles.
Meanwhile, Cycle World will get an overhaul with its November issue, with heavier paper stock, perfect binding and an editorial refresh.
Lemarchand already made similar moves at Hachette’s women’s titles including Elle and Metropolitan Home, organizing them in brand-centric groups to spur their growth across platforms.

THE American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) says New York City Council is about to give final approval to a bill that discriminates against motorcyclists and imposes severe, out-of-line penalties– The AMA also complained that the measure languished in the Council for two years and then, in a surprise move, was revived just a week before the scheduled final vote, allowing little opportunity for public comment.
“This is outrageous. This is no way to operate in a democracy,” said Imre Szauter, AMA government affairs manager. “The Committee on Public Safety considered the bill on Dec. 14, 2006, and then suddenly approves it and sends it to the full Council on Dec. 10, 2008?”
The measure, up for full City Council approval on Thursday, Dec. 18, would make it illegal for any motorcycle to be on city streets unless it has an exhaust system with a stamp that states it is approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Essentially that means the bike must have a stock exhaust system.
Motorcyclists caught without an EPA-stamped exhaust system would face fines of up to $1,000 for a first offense and temporary forfeiture of the motorcycle until the fine is paid. A second offense would result in a fine of up to $2,500 and permanent forfeiture of the motorcycle. City officials apparently believe that requiring motorcyclists to have EPA-approved exhaust systems is easier to enforce than trying to prove a motorcycle exceeds the city’s vaguely defined 80-decibel sound limit.
Szauter stressed that the AMA has long opposed excessive motorcycle sound and has funded information and public relations campaigns in support of quiet motorcycle use.
“The issue is that the New York City Council is unfairly singling out motorcyclists because motorcycles are the only vehicles covered under the bill,” he said. “If New York City officials believe they have a sound problem, then the problem should be handled through the existing noise ordinance and not through piecemeal legislation targeting specific modes of transportation.”
Szauter added that requiring motorcycles“and no other motor vehicles“to have a stock exhaust system is particularly discriminatory. When the muffler wears out or breaks on a car, the car owner can go to a local muffler shop and get an aftermarket system that costs much less than an original equipment system. The proposed New York City law wouldn’t allow a motorcyclist to do that, forcing the motorcyclist to potentially spend hundreds of dollars more for an original equipment system, assuming that system is even still available.
“If a motorcyclist can’t find a stock system, then the rider faces stiff fines and forfeiture of the machine, Szauter said. “These penalties are too severe and out of line when compared with other city laws.”
Szauter urged all New York City motorcyclists to contact their City Council members immediately and ask that they reject this discriminatory measure.
Concerned motorcyclists living outside the area, especially those who work in or frequently visit the city, should contact the Speaker of the City Council, Christine Quinn, at: council.nyc.gov –from Rogue

2010 XR1200 Trophy race series in UK Following the success of the series in Italy and the popularity of the XR1200, next year will see a one-make championship for the bike start in the UK– British Superbike Championship (BSB) race series organizer MSVR has developed the program in conjunction with Harley-Davidson and British race and performance parts specialist Harris Performance, and registrations for the 2010 XR1200 Trophy are already being taken.
Legendary London-based Warr’s Harley-Davidson, Europe’s oldest H-D dealer and no stranger to track success, is among the UK dealerships that have confirmed entry in the championship and is already preparing three bikes.
In addition to the 34 UK and Ireland Harley-Davidson dealers, individual competitors that hold an ACU Clubman license or above are also invited to enter the ten-race, eight event series, and the entry fee package includes an XR1200 motorcycle, a full race kit developed by Harris and a season-long tire deal with Dunlop.
The calendar for 2010 will be confirmed soon, but will run between April and September and will include rounds at iconic British race tracks such as Brands Hatch, Donington Park and Silverstone.
Harley-Davidson Europe’s Greg Willis says: “The feedback we’ve received from development riders has been very positive. Many have found that the bikes far exceeded their expectations.
The dealer support that we’ve received is also extremely encouraging with four entries in total confirmed even before registrations were being formally accepted.” E-mail: xr1200trophy@rbpinternational.com

NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT– Legislators Will File Brief In McDonald v. Chicago Case.
The U.S. Supreme Court will soon hear the landmark Second Amendment case of McDonald v. Chicago. The case will address the application of the Second Amendment to the states through either the Due Process clause or the Privileges or Immunities clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
The case has major implications for the legality of restrictive gun laws not only in Chicago, but also in other cities and the states across the nation. The decision to hear the case gives hope to Second Amendment advocates across America, that this fundamental freedom will be protected from infringement throughout the nation from impermissible regulation at all levels, state and local, as well as federal.
This week comes the news that U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.), are joining forces with U.S. Representatives Mark Souder (R-Ind.) and Mike Ross (D-Ark.), in filing a joint, pro-Second Amendment amicus curiae (Friend of the Court) brief before the Supreme Court in the McDonald v. Chicago case.
Last year, the historic case of District of Columbia v. Heller invalidated the District’s ban on handguns. However, the Heller case applied only to federal enclaves, such as Washington, D.C. A favorable ruling in the McDonald case would ensure that the individual right affirmed in Heller also applied as against state and local regulation.
Newspapers Gush Over Bloomberg’s Latest Gun Control Escapade
Bathed in camera flashes during a “news conference” on October 7, 2009, New York City’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg was in his element in announcing “a wide-ranging undercover investigation by the City of New York into illegal gun sales” that revealed “a willful disregard of the law” by “74% of gun show sellers.”
Or, so he claimed. The ego-driven multi-billionaire’s publicity stunt was neither “wide-ranging” nor representative of what occurs at gun shows, nor was it intended to be. And it determined nothing about “74%” of all gun show sellers.
The “Junkiest” Junk Science That Taxpayers’ Money Can Buy
Now, more than at any other time in anyone’s memory, the federal government is in no position to waste taxpayer dollars on gun control advocacy “research.” Nevertheless, the National Institutes of Health recently gave anti-gun researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine $639,586 to conduct a survey intended to prove that possessing a gun doesn’t benefit assault victims.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER RELEASES DR. WEIL FINDINGS, 5 Nutrition Tips for Increased Energy– Persistent mild fatigue or a chronic lack of energy due to day-to-day stressors or hectic schedules can often be addressed with simple preventive steps. In addition to regular exercise, quality rest, and a supplement routine designed to promote energy, try these dietary tips for a natural energy boost:
1. Eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables (preferably organic) for their protective phytochemicals and micronutrients needed for optimal metabolism.
2. Become a grazer. A large meal can trigger the body to release more insulin, resulting in low blood sugar levels and a fatigue-inducing slump. Eating smaller meals or healthy snacks throughout the day can help keep blood sugar levels steady.
3. Stay hydrated. Dehydration is a common cause of fatigue – drink purified water or other healthy liquids throughout the day.
4. Snack right. Choose healthy snacks that contain some protein, carbohydrates, and beneficial fats or select whole foods that are low in fat. Good options include a handful of unsalted nuts, fresh or dried fruit, yogurt, vegetable sticks, and whole grain bread or crackers.
5. Eat more fiber. Navy beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, and lentils are all rich in fiber, which slows the release of insulin and helps maintain a steady supply of energy.

Michael Barragan Released From Hospital– According to Ed Barragan, his son and custom builder Michael Barragan has been released from the hospital and is now continuing his recovery at home. Michael is still bound to a wheelchair while the complicated fractures in his legs, resulting from an accident involving an SUV three weeks ago, are healing. Michael and his family are hopeful that he will make a full recovery.
It is yet too early to tell how long it might take until Michael can return to working at his shop, Evil Spirit Engineering in Burbank, California, and get back on a motorcycle.
We continue to keep our fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and hope to see Michael back in the saddle real soon.

LIGHT A FIRE UNDER SOMETHING–It’s actually cold in the shop today and the pilot light is out on the heater. I need to service the dusty bastard before I light it again. I’ll finish the Bikernet Barracks shower system today before lights out.
Here’s what our latest correspondent, Betsy, said about the Love Ride cancellation: “I’m sad about the ‘Love Ride,’ feels like Christmas was cancelled! How was Bonneville?” Said Betz. We’re still working on a title, how about Calamity Correspondent? I like that one.

The World Finals was interesting, and we’ll ponder our plans for next year. Feel free to drop me a line with your thoughts: Bandit@bikernet.com. I’m trying to peel myself away from the computer, jog back to the shop and pick up the welding wand. Here’s the deal for next week.

We have a terrific feature from TBear on his own Triumph Bobber in our holding file. Irish Rich is stopping over with Dennis Goodsen, the master of cast aluminum teardrop air cleaners. Jesse James is talking about a larger No Love Party. We will bring you another chapter of the Sucker Punch Work Truck rebuild. Whatta sharp bike. I just launched another Cantina Soap story.

I’m close to going to press with the first Chance Hogan book, but I wasn’t knocked out with the cover art. If this cover is going to represent future Chance covers, it needs to set the stage. I stumbled into the Queen of Bikernet’s office and picked up the latest Old Skool Rods mag from Geno. I was knocked out by the art from James Owens. His Web site is called car-noir.com. I shipped my cover art to Geno, the master art director of his hot mags, including Deluxe. He agreed. “You’re layout is cool, but you need help with the illustration,” Geno said.
I’ll speak to Mr. Owens next week. I’m also trying to deliver on a Sucker Punch for Progressive Insurance feature bike. The week is already packed, so hang on. There’s never a dull moment around Bikernet.
Ride Forever,
–Bandit
