BIKERNET INSANITY SUNDAY POST–DAYTONA WRAP UP

bobLead2

Good Morning Sunshine

We hit Daylight Savings Time, moved the clocks ahead and we’re skating towards summer faster that Burt Munro on New Zealand sand. I’m confused this morning. We are heading rapidly toward changing times and it taste like bad tequila. Check the news below, and I’ll try to sort it out at the end. I do know we need to get involved.

I want to thank Bob Sofford for some of our cool Daytona Wrap Sunday photographs and wish all the Bike Week brothers and sisters a safe trip home.

CALIFORNIA PLANNING MOTORCYCLE SMOG CHECKS– For those of you living and riding in the state of California, you should be aware of a proposed senate bill that will require smog checks for motorcycles. Senate Bill 435, introduced by California State Senator Pavley on February 26, proposes smog checks on motorcycles, beginning January 1st, 2012, for all motorcycles model year 2000 or newer. All motorcycles had previously been excluded.

SB 435, as introduced, Pavley. Smog check program: motorcycles. Existing law establishes a motor vehicle inspection and maintenance program (smog check), administered by the Department of Consumer Affairs, that provides for the inspection of motor vehicles upon registration, biennially upon renewal of registration, upon transfer of ownership, and in certain other circumstances.

Existing law exempts from biennial inspection all motorcycles until the department implements test procedures applicable to motorcycles. Violations of smog check requirements are a crime. This bill would require the department to include model-year 2000 and newer motorcycles in the smog check program beginning January 1, 2012.

If you would like to comment on this bill, the time to contact your state legislators is now. Link: SB435

Think about this: The chances of stopping this thing are going to be slim. The back-up plan to be prepared for is move the years of the bikes tested to something like 2006 for those bikes that came with cats and newer.

–Dan Stern
sterndaniel@hotmail.com

I agree with you about the 2006 business (make it 2007), but not about “Slim.” I think we need to go after the EPA and our government. The EPA is like the McCarthy era. They think they can attack anything, fine anyone, because of this global warming bullshit. I don?t have anything against cleaner air, but we?re supposedly a Free country. There?s got to be a way to clean the air, yet allow freedom to flourish. You know there is a way. Motorcycles, all motorcycles represent less than 1 percent of all emissions.

It ain?t right, goddamnit. We need to remember that government is supposed to work for us, not against us. That?s why we hired them, right? That?s one of my reason for the SEMA effort. We need a stronger voice.–Bandit

COMMENTS ABOUT ENDLESS HORIZON: A Very Messy Motorcycle Journey Around the World by Dan Walsh– From Adventure Motorcycle Blogger: ?Walsh’s writing style is uniquely entertaining and he wastes no time sucking you in. The entire journey is a roller coaster ride of improbable food fortune layered with streaks of the worst life has to offer. What really hooked me, though, was getting to experience the story through someone that is my polar opposite. Where I would take the practical and carefully chosen approach, Walsh charges ahead guns blazing with the mindset of a man who has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

This book screams that sometimes it’s better to let life happen to you, than the other way around. Often, a little luck will carry you farther than a lot of planning. If you are searching for an inspiring and entertaining read this spring then GET THIS BOOK!? – Review by Daniel Vickers of www.adventuremotorcycleblog.net

From A Reader

?This is the third ’round the world on a motorbike’ I have read. By far the most entertaining and thought provoking of the lot. It does help to know a little British slang! Walsh in his own manner is right up there with Wm. Faulkner. Give us more.? – Review from Ed in West Virginia

In Memoriam: John M. ?Jack? Gagen — Jack, of Waimanalo, Hawaii, passed away of a heart attack while on vacation in Jamaica on February 1st, 2009. He left behind Marilyn J. Gagen, his loving wife of forty years; his sister, Alice Villani, of Aurora, Ohio; his brother, Thomas, of The Villages, Florida; his brothers in the Hamsters USA, and more friends than he probably realized. A fun-loving, genuinely nice guy, Jack made friends everywhere he went, and Reggie and I are proud to be among them. As he did with everyone who met him, he quickly became one of our favorite people, with his ready grin, his quick sense of humor, and mischievous ways. When my wife, ?Reggie? and I first met Jack on the Hamsters? Redwood Run last year, we became friends instantly, and Jack never failed to catch Reggie by surprise with a smooch on the ear from behind as she sat in her wheelchair. He was a great guy, a fun-loving, good hearted soul, & He will be missed by us all. In 2006, Jack rode his custom baseball themed Harley-Davidson across America, visiting major league ball parks to raise money for The Children?s Care Hospital in Rapid City South Dakota. He called his ride ?Kids and Chrome?, and you can visit his website for a lot of great photos of the trip and the people he met along the way. You can also read his ?blogs? as he chronicled his monumental trip across country. This was Jack?s dream ride, and I hope you will all log onto his website and share it with him. Jack Gagen’s Baseball Tour – a set on Flickr

There is even a great song that was written to remember the event, and you can enjoy it with his friends and family at: Jack’s Charity Baseball Cycle Tour – Kids and Chrome Just paste these addresses onto your browser.

By the time you read this, his memorial service will have been held at his home in Waimanalo, with flower petals spread on the ocean at Waimanalo Beach in true Hawaiian tradition, and his good friend Reverend Howie giving the eulogy. A second memorial service will be held in Cleveland, Ohio later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association of Hawaii, or the Children?s Care Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota.

In Sturgis this August, there will be a celebration of Jack?s life, his many accomplishments, and the good times he shared with his Hamster brothers, and friends. Rest in peace, Jack, and save us a spot at the bar.

CLASS LESSON FROM BIKERNET PRE-SCHOOL– What’s so exciting about a period?

A kindergarten class had a homework assignment to find out something exciting and relate it to the class the next day.

When the time came to present what they’d found, the first little boy the teacher called on walked up to the front of the class, and with a piece of chalk, made a small white dot on the blackboard and sat back down.

Puzzled, the teacher asked him what it was. ‘It’s a period,’ he replied.

‘I can see that,’ said the teacher, ‘but what is so exciting about a period?

‘Darned if I know,’ he said, ‘but this morning my sister was missing one, my mom fainted, my dad had a heart attack, and the boy next door joined the Navy.’

DAVE ZIEN, 1 MILLION-MILE MAN, REPORT– Most of you have followed the adventures of former Wisconsin Senator Dave Zien and his attempt to log one million miles on a single bike. He was poised to hit his target last fall when the unexpected took him out of the game. He blew a piston just outside of Yuma, Arizona in October, 2008. He escaped inclement weather to the Bikernet Headquarters, then traveled south toward home in Wisconsin. He decided to lay off for the winter and set out for the record this spring.

Well, he’s up and at it again, riding in Arizona as I post this news item. When he returns to Wisconsin, he and I will head for Florida on March 30th to pick up a couple of other riders. John “Rogue” Herlihy, Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member and well known photo-journalist, will ride back to cover this historic event for several bike magazines and Bikernet.com internet news.

Joining him will be Bruce Arnold, Miami, who just recently was certified as the first Harley-Davidson rider to complete the Iron Butt Bun Burner 4500 Trifecta. See the attachment. Only a very few people have accomplished this and no one until now on a Harley. The four of us will ride back to Milwaukee after some media stops and there will be a huge “landing” party at Hal’s Harley-Davidson, New Berlin, Wisconsin, on April 4th at noon.

iron butt award

If all goes as planned, Dave’s odometer will roll over to all zeroes as we enter Hal’s parking lot. You don’t want to miss this historical motorcycle moment. The Harley-Davidson Motor Company will most likely be taking part in this event and we may be asked to ride from Hal’s over to the Juneau plant. Those things have yet to be worked out, but I wanted to give you all the date of this special happening in hopes you can join us to celebrate a true long distance rider. Please share this information with your friends and any mailing groups you post to.

There will be numerous motorcycle media represented to cover this story. Also, we’re hoping Michael Kneebone, president of the Iron Butt Association will attend. I know several state legislators and local government representatives will be on hand. Please plan on attending this event to say thanks to Dave Zien for all he has done for motorcyclists over the years.

He’s been a state legislator for years and authored every motorcycle friendly piece of legislation in Wisconsin. He’s been an outreach director and champion of veteran’s rights (he’s a Marine combat veteran, Viet Nam, 1968-70) and was the driving force behind numerous biker, veteran and law enforcement monuments in our state. Read more about his long distance quest for a million miles on www.hupy.com

Just click on his picture for his ride logs and updates on this event. Hupy and Abraham, S.C. is a sponsor of his attempt to reach one million miles on his 1991 FXRT.

MYRTLE BEACH REPORTS SUCK– Is it just me or is everyone getting tired of reading about the Myrtle Beach Bike Week bullshit! You know what, if Myrtle Beach residents and their mayor think they don’t need a couple hundred thousand bikers spending money in their town then fuck ’em. I feel bad for the vendors and businesses that will be impacted by the city’s decision, but my advice is: Don’t forget this shit when re-election time comes. That’s the only voice you have in this situation and if you don’t campaign hard to have these assholes removed, then you better plan on moving your business to another location. I personally wouldn’t spend a fucking nickel in Myrtle Beach after all of this.

They can kiss my biker ass.

As for the events scheduled to take place outside the city and in Horry County. I wish the organizers luck, but you won’t be getting any of my money. My only voice is my wallet and I won’t spend money any where near Myrtle Beach for the very reason that the mayor and his cronies will be broadcasting all over how the event and Myrtle Beach’s bullshit laws and regulations successfully co-existed. No thanks, I’ll spend my money somewhere where it’s appreciated.

I find it hard to believe that any locale can be that damn choosey in this economy. Maybe Myrtle Beach makes enough money off the golfers. I can only hope that when the city looks at it’s budget next year and realizes it has to cut services because of a lack of funds, maybe then they’ll realize biker money spends just as good as yuppie golfer money. Unfortunately for them, it’ll be too damn late and we will have taken our money to North Carolina or elsewhere.

FTW PARTY ROCKS SHADY JACK’S SALOON– The FTW release party was held Saturday 2-21-09.The Free To wander DVD release party was a huge success. The release party had a whirlwind vibe that I think was felt by all. It was a bikers party. buckets full of beer, the FTW film played, The Trip Daddy’s played, there was mayhen, moshing, girls, free love, good weed, and many smashed beer bottles.

Shady Jacks Saloon managment and staff was great, they worked the party and mayhem like it was just another Saturday night. Shady Jacks Saloon is a bar that is said to hold 1500 people? I don’t know how many attended but the house was full. Pretty much asses and elbows.

THE BIKERNET KING REPORT UPDATE–I was surfing the internet looking for examples of black out Road Kings as this was the direction I was heading with my 2002. I found the link to http://www.bikernet.com/roadkingreport/ and was impressed with your project and where you had taken your Road King.

My bike was bought in August ?08, totally stock and carbureted except for Screaming Eagle mufflers see picture. The first project was to add a Badlander saddle, grips, passenger pegs, 14? hangs, and 95? top end and cams. This made it much nicer for me.

road king left

The crummy weather set in and the project expanded to a set of 18? wheels, Metzelers ME880?s, floating rotors (like yours), fender tips, and black front fender skirt. There is a Race Tech front fork kit installed and a rear frame/transmission stabilizer bracket installed for further performance improvements. The front and rear light bar were swapped with rear off a street glide, and fronts off a deluxe (I believe) with shorter or no bar and smaller bullet style signal lights.

All front lights received clear style lens and brighter bulbs than stock. The tail light is a slant style as is the license plate holder. The front and rear crash bars were removed to streamline the look of the bike. The tank console is blacked out (like yours), and a small pouch added for storing my registration and insurance card, after all, who wants to open the bags in front the man! There is a black ring on the air cleaner and ?points cover? for looks.

The inspiration came from my head, your example, and my friend Brig at Bob?s Motorcycles who built the bike. I was able to take it for a spin recently and I?m please to say I?m very happy with the outcome.

Keep it between the ditches.
