BANDIT’S FARM BLUES– Bandit, the farmer, in Culpeper , VA went to the local branch of Wachovia Bank to borrow money for a new bull.
The loan was made and Banker Bill, who lent the money, came by a week later to see how the bull was doing.
The farmer complained that the bull just ate grass and wouldn’t even look at a cow. Banker Bill suggested that he have a veterinarian take a look at the bull.
Next week Banker Bill returned to see if the vet had helped. The farmer looked very pleased. “The bull has serviced all of my cows! He even broke through the fence, and bred all my neighbor’s cows! He’s been breeding just about everything in sight. He’s like a machine!”
“Wow,” said Banker Bill , “what did the vet do to that bull?”
“Just gave him some pills,” replied the farmer.
“What kind of pills?” asked Banker Bill .
“I don’t know, but they kind of taste like peppermint.

DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REPAIR– We all know that we have certain inalienable rights such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We also have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney. What we don’t have is the guaranteed right to repair our own vehicles.
That’s right, the way it is right now, vehicle manufacturers only have to make a very small percentage of the large and growing number of diagnostic tools, training and codes available to the general public. The original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) must make all information available to everybody only as it pertains to emissions.
So that leaves you at the mercy of authorized dealerships exclusively if you need work on your antilock brake systems, some fuel injection systems, security systems and any other electronic systems on your car or bike. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has been working on this issue for a couple of years.
This is a case of the legislative process catching up with itself. Congress mandated that by 1996 all vehicles built for sale in this country must have a universal on board diagnostic (OBD) plug to harmonize the industry. When Congress did that they gave all the power to the OEMs, leaving the aftermarket and shade tree mechanics to catch as catch can. An OBD plug is the interface mechanics use to plug a computer into the vehicle in order to rapidly determine what is wrong with the vehicle. Now OEMs get to design the tools and software specific to each vehicle and can then decide who can have access to the diagnostic codes, software and tools.
Now the OEMs refuse to make some of the necessary diagnostic information available outside of the dealer network. This forces those trying to make a living in the aftermarket to turn away business and also shuts out the consumer who wants to do his or her own diagnosing.
The last Congress introduced HR 2048 which would level the playing field here. That bill made it through committee but never to the floor for a vote. Legislation has not been reintroduced yet this year, but it is close.
This week in Washington the coalition of organizations supporting this proposed legislation held a fly-in, which is really just a fancy term for a lobby week. The fly-in brought over 400 individuals to DC to meet with legislators in both bodies and voice their support for the proposed measure. A wide range of groups in support of this proposed legislation includes the automotive aftermarket, consumer electronics groups, retail groups and even the 60+ (a senior American advocacy group).
Obviously the opposition comes from the dealers and the manufacturers, as they claim that they have intellectual property rights and should not have to expose their proprietary information. No one wants more American jobs lost, but as Americans we should have the right to service and maintain our vehicles in the manner we see fit – be that at the dealership or in the driveway.
The legislation that has been drafted and is being reviewed by potential sponsors in the House and Senate, which means it should be reintroduced and assigned a bill number soon. Of course, when that happens the MRF will make you aware of the necessary information so you can contact your legislators about this issue.
Keep your fists in the wind . . .

SHOTGUN PRETEEN VS. ILLEGAL ALIEN HOME INVADERS– Two illegal aliens, Ralphel Resindez 23 and Enrico Garza 26, probably believed they would easily overpower a home alone 11 year old Patricia Harrington after her father had left their two story home.
It seems the two crooks never learned two things, they were in Montana and Patricia had been a clay shooting champion since she was nine. Patricia was in her upstairs room when the two men broke through the front door of the house. She quickly ran to her father’s room and grabbed his 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun.
Resindez was the first to get up to the second floor only to be the first to catch a near point blank blast of buck shot from the 11 year olds knee crouch aim. He suffered fatal wounds to his abdomen and genitals. When Garza ran to the foot of the stairs, he took a blast to the left shoulder and staggered out into the street where he bled to death before medical help could arrive.
It was found out later that Resindez was armed with a stolen 45 caliber handgun he took from another home invasion robbery. The victim, 50 year old David Burien, was not as lucky as he died from stab wounds to the chest. Had this happened in CA, the ACLU would be out in force suing the 11 year old girl.
Nice Shootin’, Patricia!

CHOPPER ICON, BOB CLARK, DOWN FOR SURGERY–“It’s cool they’re just pulling my head out of my ass,” Bob said recently. Doing some throat surgery and repairing a broken nose and skull fracture from an accident with an exercise machine a couple of months ago. “Been puttin’ the throat thing off for years and figured as long as I had to go in for one I might as well take care of both. Besides I love demoral and morphine, especially when they mix the two. Makes me feel like I’m back in the army again and when you’re 60 that’s a good thing.”
“Thanks for your concern. Unfortunately for humanity I’ll probably live to 110.”
We will report on his progress.

MICHELIN ANNOUNCES MOTORCYCLE TIRE RECALL– GREENVILLE, S.C., June 15 /PRNewswire/ — Michelin has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada that it is recalling Michelin(R) Pilot(R) Power 2CT and Pilot(R) Power 120/70 ZR 17 (58W) front motorcycle tires with the “Made in France” markings in the United States and Canada. This recall involves these specific tires only and has no impact on any other Michelin tires. Related actions are under way in other countries.
An examination of these tires showed a possible defect in the tread due to a manufacturing irregularity. No cases of pressure loss have been reported and no accidents have occurred.
Because rider safety is the primary concern, Michelin has decided as a precaution to replace the 120/70 ZR 17 (58W) Michelin Pilot Power 2CT and Michelin Pilot Power front tires, which can be identified by the following markings on the sidewall:
— a “Made in France” label
— DOT 6UCW 980T or DOT 6UCW 979T
Any consumer in the United States or Canada who believes they are affected by the recall should not wait to receive notification but should call Michelin Consumer Relations at 1 866 324 2835.
The company will be replacing all potentially affected tires in a comprehensive commitment to retrieve from the market any tire that does not meet Michelin quality standards. Replacement tires are available at no cost (including mounting and balancing) to consumers through participating Michelin(R) motorcycle tire servicing retailers.

TOSS ME ANOTHER JUG OF WATER–No margaritas or Jack for me. I’m on a diet and watching my bullshit health. I’m supposed to drink four jugs of water a day, take a thousand vitamins, and I’m allowed one piece of toast with 1 teaspoon of peanut butter scratched over the top, ’cause it won’t cover the slice. What kind of bullshit is that? It’s father’s day, let’s party.
Hang on for next week and another 5-Ball Racing report, and new Viking girl with the Marlboro Man’s movie bike, and a S&S tech on the King. We’re pulling the chain drive cam sent and installing the new S&S gear drive. I’ll also work on the Rivera transmission Shovelhead saver tech, a feature from Knockout motorcycles and if you bug me, another World Run chapter. Oh shit, I need to go have lunch with Chica and write his bike feature.
Another non-stop week is coming from Bikernet. Hang on. Now where’s Kara when a father needs her?
Ride Forever,
–Bandit
