Motorcycle sales in the United States slide in the first six months– With scooter sales falling over 70% dual purpose and on-road motorcycle sales see worst month in June
Weather may be warming with the summer months but motorcycle sales are cooling down according to figures released this week.
Collected and analyzed by the Motorcycle Industry Council, a not-for-profit national trade association, the numbers take the same bumpy road as the slow sales being reported in financial results of motorcycle manufacturers. The numbers for American motorcycle dealerships also reflect those being reported by their Australian counterparts.
Many believe motorcycle and scooters sales were helped this time last year by high fuel prices and a fragile consumer confidence that had the public trimming costs. Those high sales figures only seemed to compound recent results.
Scooters took the brunt of the fall in sales, decreasing over 67% year to date compared to the same period last year and an incredible 77.5% in June 2009 over the same month in 2008. Other categories of sales are dual-purpose and on-road motorcycles, both of which seemed to suffer the fall.

ABOUT THE TUCKER CAR… There’s still the question if the cars were any good or not. For starters, its doubtful than any car maker besides Tucker can say that 60 years after they were first built, the bulk of their cars are still around. From a performance standpoint, Tucker’s are hard to beat when placed against from their era. In 1954, Bill Hamlin pitted his Tucker against a new Oldsmobile 88. The Olds had a V-8, the Tucker a flat six. At the time, Hamlin’s Tucker had 110,000 on the clock, the Olds topped out at 78.8 MPH, while Hamlin’s Tucker topped out at 82 MPH. Hamlin had a slight disadvantage, in that he had to start his car in second (Tucker’s had a 4-speed, tranny, BTW), since the torque from the engine most likely would have shredded the Cord tranny if he’d started in first. The Tucker also stopped in two thirds the distance of the Olds. The helicopter engine, which powered the Tucker could run for 1,500 hours without a rebuild, and exceeded every military specification required of it. At least one Tucker had 200,000 miles on the clock without needing a major repair.
Hamlin’s unmodified Tucker was rated at 103 HP at 2,000 RPM, while a 1954 Cadillac was only 87 HP at 2,000 RPM in dyno testing. A Tucker’s engine put out some 372 ft. lbs of torque and the car had 0-60 times of 10 seconds. Not bad for a 4,200 lb car.
Had Tucker continued, we have only the barest hints as to what would have been. We know that there would have been at least two possible designs for a two door version of the car. We know, also that Tucker had purchased the patents of Secondo Campini which related to automotive turbines, and possibly would have beat Chrysler in it’s development of a turbine car. And thanks to Philip Egan we have some idea of what a modern Tucker would look like.
Still, even up to the moment he died, Tucker was trying to start another car company. Several backers in Brazil were willing to support Tucker, but he kept holding out for an American backer. However, he did name a car in honor of Rio. It was to be called the ?Carioca? and, IMHO, was a stunning work of art. Tucker was pretty closemouthed about the features of the car, but we know that it would have been built on a modular platform, and could have been easily converted into a pick up. It would have had a 100 HP rear mounted air cooled engine built by Aircooled Motors, with disc brakes, 12 volt electrical system, four wheel independent suspension, and except for the electrical components would have had one bolt and cap screw size.

CLASSIC KNUCKLEHEAD SOON TO BE FEATURED ON BIKERNET– My name is Marc Frantz. I’m the guy that sent you those pictures of the copper chopper that you featured on your website a while back.
http://www.bikernet.com/bikebarn/PageViewer.asp?PageID=1374
I wanted to show you my latest bike, and see if you would be interested in having it on Bikernet.

It’s a 1946 Harley Davidson Knucklehead. It is a 74 cu. in. low compression model “F”. Approximately 418 “F” models were produced that year. This mid to late production 1946 model has been restored from the ground up by Mr. Eldon Brown of Milestone Motorcycle Restorations in British Columbia. It’s finished in Dove grey, and is simply immaculate!!
This gentleman restores Harleys for the Otis Chandler Museum, Guggenheim Museum and the Barber Motorsports Museum. I can’t believe I found this guy!!

www.milestonemotorcyclerestoration.com
It has all the original sheet metal, correct plastic kick pedal, plastic hand grips, etc. A very authentic and period correct restoration.
Hope you like it! Bikernet is awesome, and I can’t start my morning without it!!

LOU KIMZEY WAS MY BOSS AND MENTOR FOR 10 YEARS–He designed and edited Easyriders for almost 20 year. He passed away some time ago, but will be indoctrinated into the Sturgis Hall of Fame in two weeks. I offered this quote:
Lou Kimzey changed my life, gave it meaning and a stimulating, imaginative, career wrapped around the thing I loved the most, motorcycles. He changed motorcycle magazine publishing forever, injecting lifestyle, creativity, humor, and heart into an otherwise technical journalistic endeavor. He changed the notion of grass roots political movements forever. He gave grubby bikers the ammunition and confidence to face governors and powerful long term bureaucrats. I didn’t always agree with him, but I will always miss him and respect the opportunities he afforded me, and all bikers.–Keith R. “Bandit” Ball

Broken Spoke Open ?Good Ol? Days Raceway? For 2009– Bringing Motorcycling Back To The Motorcycle Rally.
So by now you know that the Broken Spoke Sturgis County Line has been making great strides to cover all your needs during the Black Hills Rally but one thing that Jay Allen felt was missing was the ?Good Ol? Days? feeling that came from going to a rally and watching amateur racers compete on old time tracks.
In this tradition The Sturgis County Line has just completed the ?Good Ol? Days Raceway?, designed and built by National caliper motocross rider and champion, Gene Stull. Gene has 20 years of riding and has been building tracks for over 12 years now. He will have this track open and ready for the full 2009 Event schedule. So what is it? Well, it is a combination π Mile oval that will host short track amateur flat track events, High banked corners will provide great action for spectators and has already peaked the interest of racers in the area and around the country.
Inside the oval there is a motocross track like the ones from the old days where Rocket Rex Stanton and Marty Sipes would tear it up. Nice jumps and full out burms to shoot, a great practice track for young and old that will be open all week long, and it?s free to practice for anyone who camps at the County Line, just $10 to practice for non campers.

Jay and the staff of the Spoke understand that there are a lot of reasons to come to Sturgis and now believe that there is a great one to bring the whole family along. Where else in the world could you wake up to a picturesque view of Bear Butte Mountain, run a motocross practice track after breakfast, check out some of the greatest bikes from the next generation today at the Limpnickie Lot, Take a break by the pool during the hot afternoon sun, hear top national acts like Nashville Pussy at night, and watch flat track racing under the lights. All this plus contests, barmaids, special runs and events, give-a-ways, bikes shows, wait for you at the Sturgis County Line. So this year, bring the kids, bring your dirt bike and get ready to ride.

ADVICE FROM THE BIKERNET FARM– Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.
Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.
Words that soak into your ears are whispered…not yelled.

BANDIT’S BOOKS HEADED FOR GERMANY– Since this week we are two guys working on the translation. A longtime friend lives in the suburbs of Phoenix, AZ now. He said he’ll start on “Outlaw Justice” this week. He is an writer/author/ editor like me and will do it whenever he finds time for. So, we permanently keep rollin’, no rush but also no standstill. His name is Carsten Berg, he’s German and lives in the desert (smile) since 2005, I think. He did the same business as I do as he was here and now he is a consultant for German businesses in US of A. Her has a nice and cool write-style and he at once joined in as I told him the plan to launch your books in Germany. He knows you for your work and he likes to be part of it. Gee, the world is small. His homepage is: http://www.rockersnracers.com/ not much to see so far, he’s just started remodeling it.
