Hey,
I’m bummed. Sturgis is my annual tradition, an adventure to test a new build half way across the country. It’s an escape from harried Los Angeles into the old west openness and the feelings of freedom accompanying the rumble across the desert.

A reader wrote that he’ll miss my ride saga posted on Bikernet. I need to find a replacement chronicle to nowhere in particular, on the 5-Ball Factory Racer. As it comes together I relish the fact that I will have a year to test-and-tune before the Badlands Run approaches again. Hopefully next year I can roll outta Califa into the desert thinking about the beautiful Phoenix women and not where I can find a bike part or have the tank welded. Let’s hit the news:

NEW DISTRESSED BROWN LEATHER SADDLEBAGS AND SEAT– Untreated Leather Accessories Give a Harley-Davidson Dyna a 1950s Custom Look.
MILWAUKEE (July 26, 2009) ? Give a Harley-Davidson Dyna model a vintage look with a new distressed brown leather seat, pillion, backrest pad and saddlebags from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories. Each is styled to impart the minimalistic style of a 1950s garage-built custom. The supple, untreated leather surfaces will age and weather like a vintage bomber jacket for a warm, comfortable feel.
The large-capacity (2,380 cubic inches combined) Distressed Brown Leather Saddlebags (P/N 88348-10, $599.95) have a rigid-back construction that helps each bag hold its shape. Each has dark-metal snaps and buckles, and an embossed Bar & Shield logo. Fits most 2002-later Dyna models (except 2002-2005 and 2010 Wide Glide). Requires model-specific mounting hardware kit and turn-signal relocation kit, sold separately.
The Low Profile Solo Seat ? Distressed Brown Leather (P/N 51937-10, $339.95) hugs the frame for a slammed look, while its deep-bucket shape cradles the rider in surprising comfort. To accommodate a passenger, add the matching ?fender pad? Passenger Pillion ? Distressed Brown Leather (P/N 54089-10, $199.95) with leather skirts and grab strap that?s easy to install and remove. Both the seat and pillion fit 2006-later Dyna models. The Low Backrest Pad ? Distressed Brown Leather (P/N 54091-10, $89.95) is sized to match a Low Medallion Plate Sissy Bar Upright (sold separately). See an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer for fitment details.

BIKERNET HIRES ADVERTISING DIRECTOR– Bandit has just promoted me from Head Broom Technician and General Layabout to Advertising Honcho. Just thought I?d drop a note in the news to tell you all we?ve got good things coming for people who want to get their companies in front of our readership.
As part of my promotion, SinWu gave me a milk crate, a board to put on top of it, and a case of 50 weight oil to sit on. She?s one generous woman, that Sin Wu. If she wasn?t so beautiful, I?d have a problem with her. As it is, she can do pretty much anything she wants, and since my desk is now on the floor in front of her big, mahogany antique desk, life is good.
As far as the advertising goes; you can see how we do things by clicking on this link: www.bikernet.com/biz. I know, I know, you?re too friggin? lazy to follow a link, so I?ll summarize our philosophy for ya.
You can advertise anywhere. Magazines, websites, billboards, bathroom stalls, bus stations. Why advertise with us? Well, we are different. We don?t just throw a banner up and call it a day. We make sure that detailed information is available about you and your company. As we do tech articles and road reports, we drop that information into the archive for your company. If you send us news releases and stories, we?ll put those on the site for no additional charge. In short, we don?t just advertise for you, we work with you to get your company the air time you want. And we can do the job daily, weekly or monthly.
If you?re thinking of getting some ad space, give me a call. We?ll work with you to get you some good air time.
Now, I gotta go back to my desk. I can see SinWu?s legs from where I sit. Helps me think.

FLORENCE EMDE 1919-2009– Florence Emde, 90, passed away Thursday night in Escondido, California of natural causes. A motorcyclist in her own right as a teenager, she married Floyd Emde in 1941 and supported him in a racing career that earned him an induction in 1998 to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
Following his retirement from racing, they worked together as co- owners of three motorcycle dealerships in the San Diego area from 1948 until they retired in 1980.
Florence was preceded in death by Floyd, who passed away in 1994, and son David, who died in 2003. She is survived by four other children, Robert (Jeannette), JoAnn, Don (Tracy), and Nancy (Chris), plus 13 Grandchildren, and 16 Great-grandchildren. She had the unique distinction of being the only person to be both the wife and the mother of a Daytona 200 winner. Floyd won the Daytona 200 in 1948 and Don in 1972.
Arrangements are pending, with a funeral and memorial likely next week at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita (San Diego area). Details when finalized will be announced to the press, as well as posted at: www.partsmag.com

All in the Family Son of Legendary Hollywood Customizer Makes Own History in Sacramento– Throughout history there have been many notable father and son connections. To car enthusiasts, Dean and Kevin Jeffries have each made their mark on the hobby. One in Hollywood. The other in Sacramento.
Dean Jeffries customized television and movie vehicles in the 1960s, such as the Mantaray from ?Bikini Beach,? Black Beauty from ?The Green Hornet,? the Monkeemobile, and the moon buggy from ?Diamonds Are Forever.?
His son, Kevin Jeffries has taken a different route to help spotlight and promote the hobby?the California State Assembly. First elected in 2006, he immediately stood out as a friend to car enthusiasts. A few months after being elected, Jeffries joined the SEMA-sponsored State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. There are currently 16 caucus members from the California Legislature, including Caucus Chairman Mike Duvall. The caucus totals close to 400 lawmakers from all 50 State Legislatures.
Jeffries serves as Vice Chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee which oversees a large portion of bills which have an impact on the car hobby. One such bill considered earlier this year would have increased the smog check requirements for cars more than 15 years old. Jeffries urged his colleagues to oppose the measure as it would have minimal impact on air quality at the expense of car collectors.

BIKERNET PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING LAB– A husband and wife were sitting watching a TV program about psychology and mixed emotions when he turned to his wife and said, “Honey, that’s a bunch of crap; I bet you can’t tell me anything that will make me happy and sad at the same time.”
She said, “You have the biggest penis of all your friends.”

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY STUDIES GREEN EFFORTS, Curbing Electrical Bills, And Helping the Planet Going Green: Pull the plug– Even if they are not in use, common household appliances and electronics such as microwaves, computers, DVD players and televisions use power when plugged in. This not only increases your electric bill but increases overall energy consumption – a television that is plugged in but not turned on can consume as much as 20 watts per hour.
Help curb your energy consumption: unplug items you rarely use, once portable devices are charged up unplug the charger from the outlet, and use electronics only as needed. A simple step to a healthier planet!

? Joining this prestigious Canadian motorcycle magazine that I really enjoy reading is a great opportunity for me ?, says Joseph, ? I rode my first motorcycle on my 12th birthday. I lived in Toronto until I was 25 and then moved to Montreal. I was there less than a year when an opportunity to work in Saudi Arabia (for 2 years) came about. By that time I was on my 5th bike. When I came back to Canada I decided to move to British Columbia. I know a nice chopper when I see one, I know most of the bike guys and I?m very familiar with the bike shows in western Canada.?
