BIKERNET SUNDAY POST – STEEDS TEASER, LIFESTYLE CYCLES LOVE RIDE-RIDE, BOOKOO ENERGY DRINK AND BANDIT RETURNS

lincoln in arch

Hey, I’m back, goddamnit.

You only go around once in life. Sometimes you need to take the bull by the horns and go for it. I don’t watch NASCAR, stock car racing or cars with 10-foot diameter tires run over compacts. I’m a biker. But when a brother invited me to help with his effort to enter the most dangerous road race on earth, from one end of Mexico to the other, I couldn’t turn him down. We rode to Sturgis several times and hung out for almost 20 years. Besides he’s a Doctor. So I said sure.

lincoln on road

We hauled ass over 6000 miles in the last two weeks. Some 2000 of it was from the bottom of Mexico to the Laredo border. Sixty cars entered the race and 36 survived to finish. We came in 2nd in our class, Original PanAm. Get this. We were the only 2-man team to drive to the race, endure the race and drive home. You know, run what ya brung. We raced through the hills of Mexico passed throngs of people and screamin’ kids (second largest spectator sport in Mexico) with our bags in the back, packin’ our own tools, while all the other teams had race crews and back-up trucks and trailers.

Anyway, we survived and I’m back. Let’s hit the news:

Bikernet Biketoberfest Report

Just checking back in, I hope you had a ball in Mexico. Biketoberfest was a blast as usual here in Daytona. There were threats of hurricanes and rain but it was mostly dry. Only the pusses left early! My sales man hit the streets and encountered a lot of positive feed back about Renegade Biker Magazine. Things are looking good.

P.S. Here is a taste of what you missed at Biketoberbreast!

VOES Switch Info

Vacuum Operated Electrical Switch: Hey Joe, where you goin’ with that gun in your hand? Oops wrong topic. Ok this is how it works. First you need a nipple. On your intake manifold to operate a V.O.S.E. A hose runs from that to your [ V.O.S.E ] switch. As the motor turns more rpm the fuel air mixture moves through the intake manifold faster. The nipple with the hose attached to it is trying to suck air through it just like your carburetor. This is called vacuum. Just like on an old Chevy pickup truck distributor and carburetor set up.

There was a vacuum line running out of the intake to the distributor. When the vacuum off of the intake was high enough the distributor would go to full advance. That set up was a mechanical advance. A V.O.S.E uses an electrical switch that opens a circuit when the vacuum is at the correct level to tell the ignition to fully advance the spark due to the fact that the motor is turning faster than at an idle.

The only problem you may enconter by not running a V.O.E.S is rough idle and possibly hesitation early in the low RPM range.

I set my Shovel up without the VOES and tack wires, just taped them off. I’m running a J grind cam and the bike idles fine, accelerates real well. I think I’ll pass on buying a new intake and wiring in the VOES. Just more shit to go south while I’m motorin’ down the highway.

Motorcycle Photography exhibit and ride-in show Love Ride Weekend

For something great to do on the Saturday before the Love Ride, ride out to Old Pasadena to the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery for a motorcycle Kulture photography exhibition, celebrity bikes from the likes of Chica, Matt Hotch, Russell Mitchell, Roland Sands and Paul Yaffe in the gallery and a ride-in bike show outside.

For the occasion, photographer Michael Lichter will be displaying limited edition black and white and color photographs from his 25+ years of shooting the biker lifestyle all across America. His work chronicles the largest bike events dating back to the 1970’s as well as smaller gatherings right to the present.

While Michael has exhibited in many museums, this will be his inaugural show with the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery, which represents his limited edition photographic prints. A portion of the proceeds from sales will go to the Love Ride for their charities.

The show will be open November 2 through November 13 with an artist reception Saturday November 12 (Love-Ride weekend,) from 5pm – 7:30 pm. Also on November 12, there will be a ride-in bike show in the alleyways around the gallery from Noon – 4pm with celebrity trophy’s and cash prizes awarded at 4pm. www.loveride.org (only include the love ride link if we are joining forces in some way with them.)

The Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery is located at 40 Mills Place, Pasadena. For more information on the exhibit, ride-in show and directions, you can call the Gallery at (626) 535-9757 or visit their web site at www.mendenhallsobieskigallery.com. Information is also available at www.lichterphoto.com.

High School Project In Full Swing

We will be running a H-D 6-speed tranny with one of the S&S 93-inch generator Shovel motors on this years bike. I need to get an 8mm open belt drive to fit this application. We would like to run a BDL open belt. Last year Donnie Smith got them to donate a 3-inch open belt for the project.

Sunday Post Tech Question

I have a 2005 Fatboy anniversary 3,000+ Km and the speedometer has a problem with water under the glass apparently this is a common complaint, and the local dealership tells me this is not a warranty item. How can this be?? 26.000 CDN for a bike and the dealer tells me Harley will not cover the water in the speedometer!! Harley sells the machine on finish and mystique, how can this be? This is a common problem that I expect many of your readers would like to have resolved and Harley doesn’t even have a warranty dept. that the public can access, so the only way to address it is public forum.

Do you have any suggestions on a direction I can go with this?? Any help would be appreciated.

Very disappointed

SOUTH DAKOTA: Bear Butte biker bar to get new name and new location

Rapid City Journal, SD – STURGIS — Sacred Ground, it turns out, was more sacred than Jay Allen realized. Allen, the Arizona-based owner of the Broken Spoke Saloon in Sturgis, announced plans during the 2005 Sturgis motorcycle rally to build a rally-week biker bar and concert venue on land north of Bear Butte.

He was going to name it Sacred Ground as a tribute, he said, to nearby Bear Butte, a sacred site to the Lakota and other American Indian cultures. Allen even talked about erecting tipis and building an 80-foot statue of an American Indian on the 600-acre site.

It would be open for business in time for the 2006 rally. The announcement drew strong objections, however, from a number of Indians. Bear Butte and the surrounding area is indeed sacred ground, and this encroachment of sacred land must be stopped, a group named the Bear Butte International Alliance wrote in a recent issue of the Lakota Journal.

“This business venture impacts more than one businessman’s vision. This will affect the quality of life for area residents and for everyone who holds Bear Butte dear to their hearts,” the column said.

On Thursday, Allen announced a number of changes to his plan. He’s changing the name of the venue to Sturgis County Line. He is going to build the concert venue at the far north end of the property. It will be farther from Bear Butte than the Drag pipe Saloon, which is already in business, Allen said.

He’s also going to make the land available for community events and American Indian celebrations during the rest of the year. And the 80-foot Indian sculpture won’t be built.

“From the onset, I’ve opened my arms to the Native American community with totally good intentions to recognize their heritage, only to discover that it was not well-received,” Allen said in Thursday’s news release. “I thought they would be so happy that someone in the rally business would care so much about their culture and the importance of what this land means.”

Allen said he believed that he could educate motorcycle tourists about American Indian culture. “Granted, the rally is a great party. But experiencing the Black Hills is much more than that; it’s a spiritual encounter,” he said. “We intend to give the motorcycle tourist a more enchanting experience than ever before during rally because the land is so beautiful and inspiring.”

Allen also said that he had offered at one point to sell the 600 acres for what he paid to a tribe or Indian group that wanted to preserve the land. He said the same offer was made by Jim Reed, the rancher who sold the acres to him.

It is unclear how the changes will be received. The Bear Butte International Alliance temporarily withheld official comment Thursday. “But Mato Standing High, a lawyer and teacher at Black Hills State University, has been a critic of the plan. “Kind of makes it hard to go on a spiritual journey to the Black Hills with the background noise of ZZ Top and Harleys,” he said.

Contacted Thursday about Allen’s revised plan, Standing High said he remains unconvinced. “I understand that they are trying to keep their distance, and they’re trying to do it respectfully,” Standing High said. “But it’s hard for somebody to engage in their religious practices when such activities are literally within view, within earshot.”

A Cantina Religious Moment

A cabbie picks up a Nun. She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won’t stop staring at her. She asks him why he is staring. He replies: “I have a question to ask you but I don’t want to offend you”

She answers, ” My son, you cannot offend me. When you’re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I’m sure that there’s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive.”

“Well, I’ve always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.”

She responds, “Well, let’s see what we can do about that: #1, you have to be single and #2, you must be Catholic.”

The cab driver is very excited and says, “Yes, I’m single and Catholic!

“OK” the nun says. “Pull into the next alley.” The nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush.

But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying.

“My dear child,” said the nun, why are you crying?”

“Forgive me but I’ve sinned. I lied and I must confess, I’m married and I’m Jewish.”

The nun says, “That’s OK. My name is Kevin and I’m going to a Halloween party.”

New Steed Custom

Here’s some shots hot of the press of our first 330 tire bike we built for NHRA Funny Car Champion Jim White. Jim is a good friend of mine and happens to be the first guy to go 299mph in a Funny Car. Jim won the Winston Champion ship in ’91 driving the Hawaiian Punch Funny Car when he stomped John Force.

He’s now the fist guy with a Steed 330 in his garage.

The tank is made all from sheet steel, pounded out right here at Steeds, and this design was a real challenge to bring to life in steel. Aluminum tanks are for sissies to pound out, steel is where it’s at. The tank is big, but I think it all works with that jack-ass 330 tire in the back. I’ve also attached a few shots of the buck I designed for this piece along with a few progress shots showing just a sample of the amount of work it takes to pound one of these out. The “kid” in the picture is Tony Watson, who works here smashing his fingers and burning his flesh to make these designs a reality. And there’s a lot more cool stuff coming out in the near future from the Steed by Patriot guys out here in the Arizona desert. You ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

We’re taking this up to Vegas on Monday for the SEMA show next week. I’ll be up there Thursday and Friday for the end of the show so I don’t lose all my dough at the black jack table. This one will be at Cincy and Indy for all the dealer shows too along with a ton of other new cool stuff jumping off the drawing boards for the new season from the Steed team.

As always, thanks for spreading the word!
Ride safe,

Sunday Project Bike

Well I have been working on a project for the last month or so figured I might share it. I had introduced the idea on a Google message posting. Though it got attention, it wasn’t quite the attention I would have liked. But I think the project worked out great. Just thought I would share it with you all..

BooKoo Energy Steps Up Again With Team Sponsorship for Advanstar’s BooKoo Arenacross Championship Series

BooKoo Energy Drink to Sponsor Proton 1 Race Team with Holland, Lacy and Hinson Filling Roster

Santa Ana, CA October 28, 2005 – Advanstar – a leading provider of print, event and online media for the powersports, off-road and automotive aftermarket industries – today announced BooKoo Energy Drink will become the primary sponsor of the Proton 1 Race Team for the K&N Filters presents BooKoo Arenacross Championship Series with riders Rusty Holland, Tiger Lacy and Casey Hinson.

The team, based out of Provo, Utah, is a new start-up team with goals to establish themselves as a strong contender each week for wins along with taking the inaugural BooKoo Arenacross Series Championship Title. Additional team sponsors include Al Lambs Dallas Honda, Ragnarok Clothing, Sundance Mountain Spring Water, Factory Backing, Sunstar Sprockets, Dragon Optical, TriStar Clamps, and ICW Stands.

Team manager, Nick Spano says, “The entire team is looking forward to running the BooKoo Arenacross Series. Bookoo Energy has stepped up big in the world of action sports and we are very excited to be associated with such a great product. Along with BooKoo Energy and Proton 1 Oils, we have companies like Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda, Ragnarok Clothing and Sundance Mountain Spring Water that enabled us to put together a very aggressive program.” Spano added that, “All three of our riders have something a little different to offer, Rusty is a salty veteran that knows how to mix it up and has the most Arenacross experience, Tiger is hungry and will probably be the most aggressive and Casey will show the speed youth can bring to the team.”

“I love Honda! I love BooKoo! I am very excited and ready to go,” said an elated Tiger Lacey. “I’ve been looking for a strong program like this for a long time. I plan to take one race at a time and be in the big picture at the end of the series, which is to win the BooKoo Arenacross number one plate.”

BooKoo motor sports representative Greg Swirczynski says, “The opportunity to have a team within the BooKoo Arenacross Championship Series is very exciting for our company. We plan to use the benefit of a team to promote our product and series through many of our associates and retail outlets.”

“This is really big news for our Arenacross series,” said Advanstar Race Director Mike Kidd. “Once again BooKoo shows they are a true partner by stepping it up to support a team along with their title sponsorship.”

Watch for the team at the opening round in Fort Worth, TX on November 4-5 at the Fort Worth Convention Center held in conjunction with the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show.

Cantina Sex Report

A very sexually active woman tells her plastic surgeon that she wanted her vagina lips reduced because they were flapping in the breeze. Out of embarrassment she insisted that the surgery be kept a secret and the surgeon agreed. Awakening from the anesthesia after the surgery she found three roses carefully placed beside her on the bed.

Outraged, she immediately calls in the doctor. “I thought I asked you not to tell anyone about my operation!”

The surgeon told her he had carried out her wish for confidentiality and that the first rose was from him: “I felt sad because you went through this all by yourself. The second rose is from my nurse. She assisted me in the surgery and empathized because she had the same procedure done some time ago.”

“And what about the third rose?” she asked. “Oh, that rose is from a man upstairs in the burn unit. He wanted to thank you for his new ears.

One-Off Rucker Performance Custom

FORT WORTH Texas (October 28, 2005) – Rucker Performance designed and built the Meridian Marvel, a completely custom one-off chopper valued at $50,000, exclusively for Ron Cogburn, President of Meridian-Consulting. The bike was won as the prize for a hole-in-one promotion at the Redimix Charity Classic golf tournament in Grapevine, Texas on September 5, 2005 where 211 amateur golfers raised $170,000 for charity.

Fellowship of the Sword, an international Christian-based, non-denominational non-profit organization, received the donations from the tournament.

“When we built the Marvel for Ron it created a lot of buzz in this industry,” said Bill Rucker, President of Rucker Performance. “He created his own American Chopper Show online on the www.Meridian-Consulting.com site. As with current shows on TV, problems come up and get resolved. The development of the Meridian Marvel was no different. The drama and the issues can all be seen in his online video.”

The Meridian Marvel has a 124 cubic inch engine that provides ground-shaking horsepower. Rucker Performance built the bike with a custom frame and an arch backbone with a single down tube. The most prominent feature on the bike is the cobra-styled gas tank. The bike also shows off custom paint and a kicked out front end and dropped seat design.

Calls-Letters & E-Mails to your Legislators Needed On This One

Yesterday at the state capitol for the third time this session the possibility of legislation to restrict the age of passengers on motorcycles came up. Senator Pat Vance is considering introducing a bill that would forbid anyone 12 or under from riding as a passenger on a motorcycle.

The local TV station did a detailed story on the subject and also did interviews with Senator Vance and Representative Rick Geist and Dave Surgeon of the MSP. The TV station was also conducting a poll to determine if the public thought there should be a law restricting children as passengers on motorcycles. The results of that poll will be not be known until this evening’s broadcast.

It was interesting that during the interview with Representative Geist who is also chairman of the House Transportation Committee, that he stated he works with ABATE of Pennsylvania on motorcycling issues. He also stated he did not feel that we needed this law and that you can’t legislate common sense.

Senator Vance stated she was going to meet with the Trauma Society to determine what age limit should be introduced.

While we were successful to date in deterring Representative Kate Harper from pursuing her bill and also Rep. Angel Cruz I am not as confident that Senator Vance will retreat from introducing a bill. However, I am very confident that our membership will rise to the task of defeating any attempt to enact a law that will forbid motorcyclists from riding their children as passengers on their motorcycles.

Just so that you are all aware Popcorn and I will be at the River Valley Chapter meeting this evening which will be held at Knuckleheads on Route 40 in Uniontown, PA. If any of you are in that general area, we would be glad to see you there.

— Charles Umbenhauer

Another Sunday Tech Question

Is there any harm in using an EVO Oil Filter on a twin cam motor. It would have less restriction which would flow more oil and the long filter would give you more capacity.

I’M HAMMERED–It hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ve been on the road for two weeks. It’s been non-stop with daily Mexican traffic challenges and racing adrenaline rushes as we skid toward the edge of mountain cliffs. Four cars didn’t make the turns and one $200,000 special edition cobra caught fire and burnt to the ground. Beautiful car. Suppose it’s all catching up with me, so I’ll find a shot of Jack over the rocks and take it easy today. I’m burnt out on Tequila and Coronas.

ACCURATE ENG. BANNER WHITE

I’d like to thank out sponsors once more for making this excursion across Mexico a possibility. These were all motorcycle people with no interest in rally car races, who stepped up to the plate, including Saxon Motorcycles, Accurate Engineering (Berry Wardlaw), Jeff Najar from HorsePower Marketing, Richard Kransler from ReBar Engineering and Amsoil oils (Nick Roberts).

I’m fading fast, but next week will be a blast. Here’s the rundown: We have a full feature on that Wild Steed Bike, another feature from Darren Ho and a Buel Custom from Shilling. I’ll try to whip up the La Carrera story and the story on Lee Clemens 33rd Departure bike works anniversary. I have a Hard Bikes story floating around here somewhere and there’s a Hellbound line-up we’re about to launch.

Hang on. It’s going to be a helluva week before we fly out to the Long Star Rally in Galveston Texas where we’ll meet with Lucky Devil and discuss our Frisco effort with Kent Weeks.
