NRA Appeals Seventh Circuit Ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court– Fairfax, Va. – Today, the National Rifle Association filed a petition for certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of NRA v. Chicago. The NRA strongly disagrees with yesterday’s decision issued by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, holding that the Second Amendment does not apply to state and local governments.

“The Seventh Circuit got it wrong. As the Supreme Court said in last year’s landmark Heller decision, the Second Amendment is an individual right that ‘belongs to all Americans’. Therefore, we are taking our case to the highest court in the land,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. “The Seventh Circuit claimed it was bound by precedent from previous decisions. However, it should have followed the lead of the recent Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Nordyke v. Alameda County, which found that those cases don’t prevent the Second Amendment from applying to the states through the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.”

This Seventh Circuit opinion upholds current bans on the possession of handguns in Chicago and Oak Park, Illinois.

“It is wrong that the residents of Chicago and Oak Park continue to have their Second Amendment rights denied,” Cox concluded. “It’s time for the fundamental right of self-defense to be respected by every jurisdiction throughout our country.”

Oldsidecar

UNCLE MONKEY BREAKS DOWN– It started almost immediately. The coughing, sputtering and wheezing. I tried to soldier on in hope that whatever was clogging up my carb would work itself clear. After a dozen miles from home and facing another dozen across the Missouri Coteau it became painfully clear my bike was not up for the adventure.

As I pulled off into a long deserted roadside gas station my friend with his sidecar and a new friend we had picked up along the way filed in behind me. I admit I break the cardinal rule of riding and rarely carry tools with me. It is more out of compliancy then anything. Mind you this was not the first time I’ve laboured with a clogged carb. As we sprawled out in the mid day sun I was lucky that my friends are better prepared then me. We poured over the bike checking the usual trying to eliminate what I already knew wasn’t the problem. Within minutes we had the air cleaner off and tried to get it cleared; all the while a steady stream of bikes flowed by on the way to the poker run that I was suppose to be working.

We thought we had it, thought it would work but as we prepared to head out I cautioned that if it didn’t I would drop off and head back home to fix it and hopefully meet up with them again at the clubhouse. It was disheartening to wave to my friends and people as I headed back. The sun hot, the sky blue, it was a perfect day for riding and not for being squirreled away in a garage surround by my bike in pieces.

As I mentioned this wasn’t the first time I’ve tackled this problem, but it has spanned several different bikes so I decided that maybe it was time for another set of eyes to take a look. I tossed my carb into the back of my truck and headed over to my buddies shop. He and his fellow mechanics clamored around as I shared my woeful tale of disappointment. Soon, my once unmolested CV was scattered across the workbench. We shared stories of breakdowns. The endless nights spent in our own garages building, rebuilding, fabricating, and destroying.

We all have that one annoying problem that seems to haunt us and our bikes, keeping us at home on day that best be spent riding. As my carb became less and less complete we talked about tips and tricks, ways to improve, ways that didn’t improve. Before long the offender was once again complete but the stories continued. It would be hours before I would finally make it home to finish reassembling my bike.

Breaking down is never fun but it does bring us together as the brothers and sisters of the road. Sitting on the side of the road, sharing tools, sharing parts, sharing knowledge. Standing at a workbench telling our tales. There is something about a broken motorcycle that bonds us together. A common enemy that we have all faced at one time or another. It gives us a chance, a reason to tinker with our bikes, to get a little grease on our hands. It gives us a sense of achievement when it is all back together and ready to run again.

I didn’t make it to our poker run, I didn’t make it out to the clubhouse afterwards but I did spend the day working on my bike, visited with good friends talking about motorcycles. Sometimes that is better then anything.

Hey, actually breakdowns can be cool. They’re a challenge, generally a learning experience, a chance to meet locals, and check out shops we would generally blow past. Keep in mind the Lee Chapin, Mikuni boss, carb problem code, “Some 90 percent of all carb problems are electrical.”–Wrench

‘BAD ASS’ ETCHED MOTORCYCLE CHROME REDEFINING BIKE CUSTOMIZATION– SAN PEDRO, CA (June 2, 2009): Bikers and tattoos have a long and storied history, and Eric “The Sandman” Haase hopes to add another chapter with the launch of a new way to customize rides across the country.

Haase, a tattoo artist with 17 years of experience, is the man behind Bad Ass Chrome & Glass. The company provides bike enthusiasts with a truly-custom way to add “bad ass” designs and details to their bike’s chrome, faux-chrome and windshields.

Unlike generic laser or computer-stenciled pieces, Bad Ass Chrome & Glass provides bikers with 100-percent custom art that is hand drawn and sandblasted. The result is a unique, multi-dimensional image that looks cool in any light.

Because each piece is done by hand – never a computer or a laser – nearly any chrome part can be customized. Derby covers, gas caps, pipes, horns and coil covers – even handlebars – can be etched with an unlimited variety of designs. Just like tattoos, chrome etching can now be customized with the individual’s taste and bike’s lines in mind. Popular designs include skulls, flames, “in memory of…” honors, dragons, snake scales, “Sailor Jerry”-style pin ups, and “dead man’s hand” playing cards, but when it comes to design, anything is possible.

Anyone with tattoos will tell you that they’re addicting. In the same vein, Bad Ass Chrome & Glass is an affordable addiction. Prices start at just $75.

Clients can ship their parts to Bad Ass Chrome & Glass’s San Pedro, CA headquarters or the company can provide parts. Bikers in the Southern California region may also arrange for pick up or delivery.

An online portfolio, FAQ page and more can be found at www.BadAssChromeAndGlass.com. High-resolution images and interviews available upon request. Complimentary custom product samples available for review.

RECIPE APPROVED BY BIKERNET CULINARY INSTITUTE, Broccoli Salad With Avocado– The contrasting textures of crunchy broccoli and creamy, soft avocado make this quick salad interesting and delicious. It is rich in monounsaturated fat and full of protective phytocompounds and fiber. Don’t forget to use the broccoli stems, which, if properly trimmed, are as good to eat as the florets. Cut a slice off the butt end of each large stalk and peel the stalks just below the outer fibrous layer to expose the tender, lighter-colored flesh within.

The Goods
1 pound broccoli
1 ripe avocado
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon grainy prepared mustard

Trim and wash the broccoli and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Steam or boil the broccoli in a large pot until it is just crunchy-tender and bright green, then drain it well, and cool.

Peel and pit the avocado, then cut it into small cubes. Fold the avocado into the broccoli.

Whisk the olive oil, lemon juice, and mustard together in a small bowl, until well mixed. Toss the broccoli and avocado with the dressing.

THE BOTTLE OF BANDIT’S CANTINA WINE– Tom was driving home from a business trip in Western South Dakota when he saw an elderly Native man walking on the side of the road.

As the trip was a long and quiet one, he stopped the car and asked the Native man if he would like a ride.

With a silent nod of thanks, the man got into the car.

Resuming the journey, Tom tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Native man. The old man just sat silently, looking intently at everything he saw, studying every little detail, until he noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Tom.

‘What in bag?’ asked the old man.

Tom looked down at the brown bag and said, ‘It’s a bottle of wine. I got it for my wife.’

The Native man was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, he said:

Good trade. .. ..’

SEMA EFFORTS TO ASSIST BUSINESS DURING TOUGH ECONOMY– The goal of this year’s marketing campaign “Like a Pit Stop for Your Business” is to inform buyers that the SEMA Show is the only place on the planet where they can tap into literally everything they need to keep their businesses strong.

The SEMA Show has it all: new products, relevant education, critical information, equipment and technology, fresh ideas and face-to-face networking with key manufacturers.

But most importantly, the SEMA Show instills the positive energy and inspiration that can re-energize buyers’ businesses, keep them thriving through these difficult times and be poised for explosive growth in the coming economic recovery.

“When we strategized with the SEMA marketing team, [SEMA President and CEO] Chris Kersting said something that inspired our creative team,” said Denise Paccione, president of Marketing Design Group, ad agency for the SEMA Show.

“We translated his comment, ‘SEMA is the industry’s partner; we’ve got your back,’ into a metaphor that the industry would understand immediately: SEMA SHOW – Like a Pit Stop for Your Business.

“The visual of the concept pictures a re-energized SEMA Show attendee backed up by a pit crew representing the comprehensive resources of the SEMA Show, all at his disposal.”

Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications and events, underscores the importance of communicating this message.

“SEMA has always been a dedicated industry partner, and this year it’s critical that we get the word out about it,” MacGillivray said. “The industry needs a shot in the arm, and the SEMA Show can provide it.”

To ensure that happens, SEMA has planned a multi-tiered, multi-media marketing campaign designed to bring every segment of the industry together at the SEMA Show.

SIN WU’S MANAGEMENT LESSON– A Japanese company and an American company decided to have a canoe race on the Mississippi River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team’s management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors reporting to 3 area steering superintendents who then reported to 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the ‘Rowing Team Quality First Program,’ with meetings, dinners and free “RTQFP” t-shirts and pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra work days for practices and bonuses for the rowing team’s management.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment.

The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year’s racing team was out-sourced to India.

Lastly the 8 managers were reassigned to implement “RTQFP” throughout the company’s other divisions leading to the total collapse of the company and it’s ultimate bankruptcy.

Sadly The End!

WIND ‘EM UP–The sunlight cascading off the ridge is calling. The softness at the nap of her neck beckons us to ride across town, or across the state. Maybe it’s Maria’s tacos calling from across town and that Gold Cadillac Margarita.

What the fuck, let’s ride into history. Tomorrow I’ll launch chapter 21 of Chance Hogan’s second Adventure, chasing Sin Wu around the world. Then I’ll work with someone on the vast Bikernet Staff to Launch Tom Foster’s Barrio bike feature. It’s a love story tribute to Johnny Chop behind a panorama of riding across gang riddled Los Angeles “Avenues” district. Hang on.
