AUSTRALIAN TATTOO ARTIST REPORTS FROM IDAHO FALLS– In Idaho falls, heading out to Reno way today.

We rode thru Yellowstone yesterday, it was freezing cold. We had a bit of rain, but we had a whole lot of sleet. It is like frozen rain, kinda like small hail. The road was blanketed in ice, so we just rode in the tyre track of the car in front.

Beautiful scenery, too bad there wasn’t any wildlife. They were all hiding from the cold I think. It was 40 degrees Fahrenheit. 32 is zero Celsius.

Toni saw a fox on a rock, and I saw a couple of squashed squirrels. That was it for Yellowstone wildlife.

Took five hours to do 200 miles with all the tourist traffic.

The day before, we were in Greybull, Wyoming. They had a massive hail storm, stones the size of golf balls, they sounded the tornado siren. Luckily, we were off the road at that time.

Heading into desert again today, so back to another extreme. see ya’s all soon.

Indian

YES, INDIAN MOTOCYCLE IS BACK!– The Annoying Truth: Transmission is Not The Same As Reception. We’re thrilled that the anniversary of the Grand Opening of Indian Motorcycle Charlotte is less than 60 days out. Most of you know the story by now. After nearly four years of development, engineering and refinement, Indian Motorcycle Company produced its first groundbreaking machines just about a year ago.

At the same time, work was finishing up on our spectacular new dealership along I-85 just outside of Charlotte. Not only is it the Indian Flagship, but America’s Motorcycle Showplace and a great place to call home. The folks at Indian Charlotte very proud of what they’ve accomplished as the world’s leading Indian dealer, but there is so much more for them to do.

In the months following their opening last Fall, they’ve displayed the spectacular new Indian Chiefs at dozens of motorcycle events in several states, participated in numerous rides, run print and radio advertising and enjoyed some exceptional public relations coverage.

Yet there’s one conversation keeps occurring at the dealerships “outreach” events: “Indian is making motorcycles again?” Yup. Of course, they follow up with historical details, talk about the new plant, the fabulous new Indian Chief models and their dealership. Probably had well over a thousand such conversations, and while they report it’s sometimes mildly frustrating, it’s also a good reminder that the company’s communications work is never done.

As the annual pilgrimage to Sturgis has drawn to a close, a few hundred thousand close friends have again participated in this annual last blast of summer. Indian was there with some of the 2010 Chief models and Motorcycle-USA.com has a nice story on the ride to the Crazy Horse Memorial. Also want to point out a great story in the Aug-Sept issue of Ultimate Motorcycling (formerly Robb Report Motorcycling). Neale Bayly and Tom Riles did an excellent job of capturing the essence of what Indian Motorcycle Company is all about as well as providing a comprehensive on-road review of what it’s like to ride the Indian Chief Vintage. Check it out.

To find out more and to show your support, please feel free to give Mark Moses a call at 888-600-Indian If you can get to Charlotte, I recommend it highly so that Mark can schedule a demo ride for you all.

A classic Red Devils parachute display wowed festival goers; as six team members jumped in to the event from an altitude of 10,000ft. Trailing smoke to demonstrate their speed and movement, the highly-skilled skydivers reached speeds of up to 120mph, before deploying their parachutes. Once safely under canopy, the team members demonstrated breathtaking, high-speed ?Swoop? landings and spectacular ?Canopy Formations? ? both unique to parachute displays in the UK.

The team members joined Hells Angels member ?RED? to make a very special presentation to well known local councilor Brian Slaughter. Brian (75) received a ceremonial baton, which had been handed between the skydivers on their descent, to acknowledge his work at the show raising money for charity at the unwavering support he has shown for the Bulldog Bash.

The other main attraction; the tenth anniversary of the Bulldog custom show was won by Vic Jefford with his awesome ?High Roller? trike. In a new category for 2009 Rebecca Thompson won the Best Ladies Build for her Servi-car 45 Trike.

Photos Redefine the Hood Ornament BOUNDLESS by John Covington premiers September 4th, 2009 at After Hours Gallery– July, 2009 — Phoenix, AZ: John Covington knows a thing or two about the world of custom bikes, rock-n-roll, tattoos and the women who grace those worlds. He?s designed and built Alternative American motorcycles, he?s a rock drummer, his flesh has some serious ink, and as a professional photographer he?s shot hundreds of women adorning vehicles like living hood ornaments.

Those women are the inspiration for Boundless, an exhibition of Covington?s photographs at After Hours Gallery this September.

Says Covington, ?Women in car and motorcycle shoots are typically objectified as marketing accessories. After one shoot, a model and I discussed the idea of creating images where she could express herself freely in a simple open studio environment. So we tried it, and when she saw the results of our collaboration, she said it made her feel empowered and boundless. This was the inspiration for the nearly 2-year project that resulted in the images for Boundless.? The show consists of 11 giant photograph prints. The gallery prints are nearly 48?X 48? and models are nude in virtually every shot. The photographs are so large you can quickly become lost in their details.

BOUNDLESS opens September 4th at the After Hours Gallery at 6:00PM. After the First Friday premier, Boundless can be seen weekdays, Third Friday, and by appointment until September 30th. After Hours Gallery is located at 116 W. McDowell Road, 1 block west of the Phoenix Art Museum and the Light Rail stop on Central & McDowell Road. For more information, visit www.AfterHoursGallery.com or call the Gallery at 602-710-2398.

SEMA banner
Anybody can join Sema, large companies, small, dealers and individuals.

SEMA STEPS UP AUTO RESEARCH– SEMA outgoing Chairman Jim Cozzie took the podium during the annual Board Officer?s installment ceremony prior to handing over the gavel to incoming Chair Rick Rollins, and announced one of the most innovative alliances in SEMA?s 47-year history. Cozzie outlined a partnership between California-headquartered SEMA and South Carolina-based Clemson University, which launched the $215 million International Center for Automotive Research [CU-ICAR] in 2003, to the audience of more than 500 attendees.

?The new alliance represents an unprecedented industry-academia platform for advanced vehicle technology and performance aftermarket education program development, notably forged in the midst of one of the automotive industry?s most challenging periods in history,? Cozzie said.

?The automotive original-equipment and aftermarket industries are undergoing serious transformations and will continue to evolve in the coming years. The Clemson relationship can benefit SEMA-member companies by providing vehicle technology integration; development and support to help members leverage new business opportunities.?According to Chris Przirembel, Clemson University?s vice president for research and economic development, the partnership represents ?an extraordinary opportunity for Clemson, as a major university committed to becoming one of the world?s leading automotive and motorsports research and education centers, to join with SEMA and its powerful industry membership base in a shared mission to help shape the future of the automotive performance aftermarket industry.?

As part of the agreement, Clemson University?s Campbell Graduate Engineering Center on the 250-acre CU-ICAR campus?located midway between Atlanta and Charlotte along I-85 in Greenville, South Carolina?is positioned to serve as a systems integration and testing center for SEMA and its 7,500 members.

The unique academic center houses a variety of laboratories and test cells including a 7-post shaker in an environmental chamber, a chassis dynamometer in a semi-anechoic chamber, engine test cells, an electromagnetic compatibility chamber, and a full-scale vehicle three-dimensional CMM for measuring geometric and physical coordinates of parts and vehicle surfaces. Dr. Imtiaz Haque, executive director of the Campbell Center, which offers the only automotive engineering Ph.D. in the United States, said an ?ultimate goal would be for SEMA and Clemson to collaboratively develop an integrated systems approach for designing and customizing today?s vehicles and vehicles of the future.

Among other initiatives, the graduate center will develop prototype project vehicles with the objective of demonstrating the integration of specialty-equipment and performance aftermarket components, total vehicle systems and modules, thereby creating new opportunities for interested SEMA-member companies to directly participate.?SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting said the Clemson-SEMA relationship supports SEMA?s vehicle technology strategic goals for identifying industry needs and developing effective solutions to assist members with complex vehicle technology challenges and opportunities.

THE ELIXIR OF ENDINGS–We have a joke around the Bikernet Galley. It’s called the Elixir of Life. A few grocery items rank in this illustrious category including: Avocados, tomatoes, broccoli, hummus, trail mix, yogurt, honey, green tea and red wine. If that’s all we ate, we’d live forever. There’s a couple of items I forgot, like egg whites.

My pappy grew up during a couple of depressions and he took tremendous pride in being able to find something to feed his family. His adage was, “You’d be a long time starving, if this is all you had to eat.”

Bobcarillo's bike
Johnny Humble is working on a feature on Bob Carillo’s bike right now.

My adage is, “This is the elixir of life,” when I’m referring to something natural that could possibly keep you healthy and happy for decades to come. What the hell, ya gotta believe in something. So, I eat as healthy as a rabbit on the open range then ride a motorcycle like a madman with a death wish, drink whiskey and roll the dice on life. Don’t ask me to figure it out.

Ride Forever
