FINALLY, THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING– If you believe the experts that our climate is going to hell in a hand basket, global warming is not a laughing matter. But it is not all bad and apocalyptic: Higher temperatures mean less need for clothing ? just imagine the sights.

350_3_edited-1

Supermodel Cameron Russel and some of her friends provide an interesting look at how that might turn out with a video they produced to support the efforts of 350.org.

?We figured we’d try to get the point across the best way we know how – with clothes, or really, with the lack of clothes. We hope you’ll get the point.? Don’t worry Cameron, we get the point loud and clear: Global Warming offers great perspectives! Unless, of course, you live near sea level.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER QUESTIONS DR. WEIL ABOUT ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE AND ZEN–What is an Ethical Will?– As we go through life, we acquire wisdom and life lessons that can benefit others. One way to pass along your stories and experiences is through an ethical will. Unlike an ordinary will or last testament, an ethical will has less to do with material possessions and more to do with nonmaterial gifts and spiritual well-being – a love letter of sorts for your family, friends and community.

Writing an ethical will benefit you as well. It can:
Help you to make sense of your life and the aging process.
Provide a way to share your hopes, dreams and values with loved ones.
Help you take stock of your life experience and distill from it the values and wisdom that you have gained.

Regardless of your age, you should consider the elements of an ethical will. You can choose to share your insights while you are alive, or leave your thoughts for loved ones to share after you are gone. It is often an ongoing process – put the document aside, read it over as the years pass, and revise it from time to time as you see fit. Certainly, while an ethical will can be a wonderful gift to leave to your family at the end of your life, its main importance is what it can give you in the midst of life.

HALLOWEEN WORD OF THE DAY– eke EEK, transitive verb:
1. To gain or supplement with great effort or difficulty — used with ‘out’.
2. To increase or make last by being economical — used with ‘out’.

When the PRI unites around a candidate and the two opposition parties divide the rest of the vote, the ruling party can usually eke out a victory.
— Mary Beth Sheridan, “PRI Wins Mexico State Governor’s Race, but Loses Smaller Stronghold”, Los Angeles Times, July 6, 1999

Inevitably, the prodigious footnotes get in the way of what is, basically, a simple parable. Like the wide margins the publishers use to eke out a skimpy text, they make the novel seem bigger than it is.
— James MacBride, “What Did Myra Want?”, New York Times, February 18, 1968

Although life was hard it was not unendurable, and the rugged and resourceful villagers eked out a living on the thin crust of the soil.
— Suheil Bushrui and Joe Jenkins, “Kahlil Gibran: Man and Poet”

“Eke,” Sin Wu screamed when she saw Bandit naked in the hallway.
–Wrong eke, by Snake, Bikernet editorial staff.

Eke is from Old English ecan, “to increase.”

Del Rio Hotel

POTENTIAL BANDIT’S CANTINA DISCOVERED IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA– Yep, it’s too bad you can’t do that. I used to manage restaurants back in my prior life…a 4 star in Sacramento among them. LOVED the life and always thought I’d end up with a place of my own. Love to cook and all that goes with that world.

Apparently that was the big problem with this place, she couldn’t find reliable kitchen staff and closed the kitchen, the first nail in the coffin for her.

Del Rio party

The Del Rio was known far and wide as having the best prime rib in NorCal. I was at a gig where the Bravo Bros (Top Hatters in their 80s) asked me where I was living. Upon hearing Isleton, they both began salivating over memories of the steak dinners they used to ride up for when they partied at the hotel for a few days back in their hey-day. The Del Rio will be missed.

Just behind the bar is the levee (originally built by Chinese immigrants) that separates the Sacramento River from our houses. The old hardware store (now closed) is just down from the hotel and the top floor is where Victorian folks could see the paddle boats coming upstream and alert the town folk of arriving guests/deliveries from San Francisco.

cones_pic

Disposable Safety Cones from Vanguard ADA Systems, Paper or Plastic?– You need those damn things at every motorcycle event, at your local open house, or wish you had one or two when you get stranded on the road somewhere with some stupid technical problem: safety cones. The regular plastic things never seem to stay where you put them, migrate through the whole parking lot in 15 minutes flat, and you sure as hell won’t fit one of those in your saddlebags. Vanguard ADA Systems, a company well-known for safety products in ADA fields, recently branched out to include its most recent product: the DisposaCone, the world’s first disposable traffic barricade system.

Introduced first in March 2008, DisposaCones are already in use in the US and available in Canada as well. Jon Julnes, owner of Vanguard ADA Systems and the DisposaCone division, invented the product after years of frustration at running back and forth to construction and other sites to pick up 3 of the 10 traffic cones they left only the day before.

Made of recyclable paper with a small butyl (tar) adhesive strip on the base, which the company claims keeps them attached to any dry, hard surface, the cones are said to actually stay where you put them. Sized perfectly to fit motorcycle saddlebags, emergency preparedness kits and under most car seats, DisposaCones are available at www.disposacone.com , and soon at retail outlets nationwide.

BIKERNET STRESS ELIMINATING HOLIDAY STRESS WITH Stress Relief in 5 Steps, Part 1: Breathing from Dr. Weil– Each Sunday in November we present tips that can help you manage unhealthy stress. Consider them this holiday season, and pass them along to family and friends!

Looking for a simple, healthy way to help get through the day? Try breathing exercises – a natural and effective way to reduce stress, maintain focus, and feel energized. Exhaling completely is a useful practice that is especially easy to learn – it can promote deeper breathing and better health. Give it a try: Simply take a deep breath, let it out effortlessly, and then squeeze out a little more.

Doing this regularly will help build up the muscles between your ribs, and your exhalations will soon become deeper and longer. Start by performing this exhalation exercise consciously, and before long it will become a healthy, unconscious habit.

HANG ON, WE’RE HEADED INTO THE HOLIDAYS–My crystal ball calls for the economy to improve, and jobs become available during the holidays. This is a perfect time for America ingenuity to surface in a major way to create lasting jobs. I had a notion for a business years ago. We have car detailers, why not street detailers, a team devoted to cleaning streets, fixing the lights and signs, painting the curbs and refurbishing the landscape. It bugs me to turn on a street in America that’s filthy or looks like shit, because of a lack of upkeep.

flag

That’s my Sunday economic notion. Here’s another one. There’s a lot of stimulus money floating around out there, while small businesses struggle. Bikernet could support starving, writers, photographers, and motorcycle artists all over the country, if we could file for a stimulus grant. Any ideas? In fact this weekend we were able to deliver a very cool gig to a couple of freelance writers in our industry.

CannonBallbannerLarge

Motorcyclecannonball.com, needed an editor for their web site. We hooked Lonnie, the boss, up with an antique motorcycle writing fool and additional freelancers, including our own Wilburn Roach. Watch as we follow, with the Cannonball crew, pre-1916 builds all over the country, then the cross-country ride. Bikernet is now an official Sponsor.

Donshenderson
Here’s another antique, from the Don Whalen collection, we will feature in the near future.

Okay, enough of that bullshit. Here’s what’s on the plate for next week. We have an official Lower Alabama Weather Report, more road stories from Scotty and Michelle. I’m going to finally wrap-up the 5-Ball Racer build. We have a 2010 Road King road test to Primm, Nevada casinos coming from Jon Towle. I’m headed to the SEMA aftermarket car convention next week and will report back in the Thursday news. I’m working with S&S, Paughco, and Bakers on a Sportster build tech, to help guys build very cool, cheap bobbers with wrecked or Sportster baskets. We will also bring you a tech, demonstrating that SugarBear hand builds short springers with small rockers to fit any motorcycle.

towle
Check the mad Little Jon rolling Sportster, Iron model road test on the Home Page.

We discovered the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarters, built in 1925, may be approved for the Mills Act and reduced our sky-high property taxes. We are working with the city for a grant to refurbish the exterior back to it’s original Catalina Hotel exterior.

Never a dull moment. I have more exciting news for next year, I may be able to release in the Thursday News. If Bikernet is any indication of our overall economic condition as we wrap up dower 2009 and head into 2010, we’re fucked. I’m kidding. Actually Bikernet is up this year, and next could be even better. Hang on.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
