BIKERNET SUNDAY POST – SHOVELHEAD GASKET KIT FROM JAMES, RED BULL US GRAND PRIX, DAYTONA SHOTS, GUN REPORT FROM CHICAGO, A WORD FROM BIKERNET INSURANCE AND MORE…

lead

Hey,

As strange as life can be, there are always opportunities cropping up out of the mud. That’s one of my major quandaries for 2010. I see every sporadic encounter as an opening to kick off another project.

Sinwu

Sin Wu is constantly telling me, “Do me, not another project.” Maybe, a portion of the creative drive is economic panic. But this weekend I poured enough Fireball Whiskey down my gullet to find inspirational clarity. I need to relax and scratch half of my project list items off my notes onto the floor and relax.

I’ll tell you more at the end, but our focus will be more cemented on Bikernet, Bikernet entertainment and supporting the folks who have supported us for 10 years. Let’s hit the Post:

More Excellent Gun Wisdom SPONSORED BY DANNI ASHE…….. The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

1. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.
2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy…
4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away .
5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him ‘Why do you carry a 45?’ The Ranger responded, ‘Because they don’t make a 46.’
6. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.
7. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. ‘Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?’

‘No ma’am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.’
8. Beware of the man who only has one gun, because he probably knows how to use it very well.

‘The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.’ G. K. Chesterton

A people that values its privileges above its principles will soon lose both.?

SPEAKING OF OPPORTUNITIES, THE CANADIAN CONNECTION–I’ve know Terry Lovering and his wife Heather since 1988. He called me at Easyriders and asked if he could show me shots of his bike. He lived in Vancouver.

A week later he showed up at our Agoura offices on the bike he wanted me to consider, with a package of professionally shot photos. It ended up on the cover of Easyriders.

LOVERINGBIKE

He’s a master at everything he does including martial arts training. The gym in his house outshines most professional dojos. And now he’s in the process of complete a new custom built around a board game he created 30 years ago. He’s hoping to unveil his Consigliore creation at the Las Vegas Bike Fest this year.

You may be the first to see his bike and the game come to fruition on Bikernet.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER EMERGENCY MEMO– 4 Reasons to Eat Beans– Each Wednesday in March read our Daily Tip for insight into some of Dr. Weil’s favorite foods, courtesy of Dr. Weil on Healthy Aging! They often get a bad rap for causing indigestion and flatulence, but the health benefits of beans (and other legumes, such as lentils and chickpeas) make them a stellar choice in a healthful diet. Beans are:

1. An excellent source of vegetarian protein, providing six to seven grams per ½ cup serving.
2. High in folic acid, which may help to protect against cancers of the lung, colon, and cervix, and prevent birth defects.
3. A great source of fiber, dishing up 25-30% of the Daily Value of dietary fiber, 75% of which is insoluble – the type that reduces the risk of colon cancer.
4. A low-glycemic-index food, making them a good option for diabetics.

In addition, most varieties are inexpensive and versatile. I recommend 1-2 servings of beans and legumes per day – easy to do if you swap out meat for beans in salads and sandwiches, and make hummus or bean dip part of an afternoon snack.

And if stomach upset is a concern, you can improve the quality and digestibility of beans by consuming them with grains such as brown rice, which provide a complimentary protein profile. Discarding the soaking and cooking water when using dry beans may also help reduce flatulence.

A brother turned me on to DRWEIL.com a year ago. If you want to receive his daily and weekly recommendations, check out his web site. The info is all free.–Dr. Wong, Bikernet Brain Surgeon

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS READER REVIEW–Just finished reading the Thursday post! It rocked goddamn it! When the Blog started the post suffered some, but looks like you got traction again and balls out.

Maybe the threat of jury duty was motivation? Valerie looks smokin’ and Mike Pullin’s ride’s a close second. Thanks for the pic and link to the Swedish truck show…old roadholes like me still get wood from big wheels.

CANTINA READER REQUEST– I wasn’t gonna do it, but I can’t help myself. I’d sure like to see another feature with Stephanie the Saxon girl. Can’t seem to get enough of her and can’t find her anywhere else on the web. I’ve worn out that link on Bikernet. It’s startin’ to fade and the corners are worn down.

Thanks for listenin’ to me whine. Keep doin’ what yer doin’,it’s all good.

I haven’t seen her for some time … I will be in Phoenix in a couple weeks so who knows? I am well. … just finished Carol’s annual fundraiser yesterday for horse rescue. It was her sixth year and about 1500 people showed up …

I sure am glad that you guys are going to be at Bonneville this year … just hasn’t been the same without you. I am also going to be in Sturgis this year. First time in about 35 years … back when I thought it was getting too big … and I am really looking forward to it.

WHEN INSULTS HAD CLASS– These wonderful insults are from an era before the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words:

The exchange between Churchill & Lady Astor: She said, “If you were my husband I’d give you poison.”

He said, “If you were my wife, I’d drink it.”

A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.”

“That depends, Sir,” said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress.”

“He had delusions of adequacy.” – Walter Kerr

“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” – Winston Churchill

“I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.” – Clarence Darrow

BIKERNET READER HAS A STARTER PROBLEM– I have a problem with my old Harley. It seems the starter seems to drag quite a bit when the bike is cold and it has trouble stating. I changed the starter, starter clutch, battery and relays and it still is slow to turn over and crank.

Yet once fired up and warm, I can start it all day. It sits on a trickle charger when I get home and the charger works fine on other batteries. What do you think is drawing so much juice that the starter drags so much when the bike is cold.

The Black Bra (as told by a woman)– I had lunch with 2 of my unmarried friends. One is engaged, one is a mistress, and I have been married for 20+ years.

We were chatting about our relationships and decided to amaze our men by greeting them at the door wearing a black bra, stiletto heels and a mask over our eyes. We agreed to meet in a few days to exchange notes..

Here’s how it all went.

My engaged friend:
The other night when my boyfriend came over he found me with a black leather bodice, tall stilettos and a mask. He saw me and said, ‘You are the woman of my dreams. I love you.’ Then we made passionate love all nightlong.

The mistress:
Me too! The other night I met my lover at his office and I was wearing a raincoat, under it only the black bra, heels and Mask over my eyes. When I opened the raincoat he didn’t say a word, but he started to tremble and we had wild sex all night.

Then I had to share my story:
When my husband came home I was wearing the black bra, Black stockings, stilettos and a mask over my eyes. When he came in the door and saw me he said,

“What’s for dinner, Zorro?”

U.S. Supreme Court Hears Chicago Gun Ban Case– On Tuesday, March 2, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of McDonald v. City of Chicago. The case may well decide the scope and nature of gun laws in the United States for decades to come. The final decision will be handed down in a few months, most likely in June.

As we’ve reported in past alerts and in NRA magazines, McDonald is one of two challenges to the Chicago handgun ban that were filed immediately after gun owners’ landmark 2008 victory in District of Columbia v. Heller. After the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled-wrongly-that 19th century cases denied any right to Second Amendment protection against state and local laws, both McDonald and the companion case, NRA v. City of Chicago, were appealed.

The Court agreed to hear the McDonald case, but since that decision would affect the NRA case equally, the NRA was also a party to the McDonald case, and the Court granted us a share of the oral argument time.

BUBS BONNEVILLE Word of the Day for Sunday, March 7, 2010– inveterate in-VET-uhr-it, adjective:

1. Firmly established by long persistence; deep-rooted; of long standing.

2. Fixed in habit by long persistence; confirmed; habitual.

In Montpelier, where this prison stands, the inveterate prejudice against prisoners has been swept away.
— Morrison I. Swift, “Humanizing the Prisons”, The Atlantic, August 1911

He is an inveterate nibbler, popping nuts and chocolate into his mouth as he talks, leaning forward in his chair to forage in the tins with his right hand.
— Michael Ignatieff, Isaiah Berlin: A Life

I was an inveterate museum-goer from the age of fourteen, when I’d take the trolley to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts after school and wander the halls of Greek antiquities.
— Jane Alexander, Command Performance

Inveterate is from the past participle of Latin inveterari, “to grow old, to endure,” from in- + vetus, veter-, “old.” It is related to veteran, “one who is long experienced in some activity or capacity; an old soldier of long service; one who has served in the armed forces.” The noun form is inveteracy or inveterateness.

ORLANDO
Allen Dixon owns Central Florida Choppers near downtown Orlando.

THE PRICE OF CHOPPERS DROPPING– Through the open door at Central Florida Choppers near downtown Orlando, Allen Dixon can hear the rumble and roar of motorcycles traveling up and down Interstate 4.

It is, after all, Bike Week, and Dixon makes his living building motorcycles.

But right now, he isn’t building many. The recession has sent the market for choppers? long, raked-out custom cycles with Harley-Davidson-style engines and tall “ape hanger” handlebars? straight into the Dumpster.

“The $40,000 and $50,000 bikes are gone for now,” said Dixon. 46. “If anyone is buying, it’s bikes in the $20,000 to $30,000 range, and there’s very little of that right now.”

The downturn has also affected the used market. “Most guys are trying to sell their bikes. I can’t build you one for what they’re selling theirs for. I’ve got one in here right now,? the guy probably paid $25,000 for it, and he said if I can get $10,000 for it, sell it.

“A lot of shops,? a lot of shops,? have fallen by the wayside. But we’re still here, still have the lights on. We’re struggling, but we’re still here.”

Many of us got an introduction to choppers 40 years ago with the release of the film Easy Rider, which had stars Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper biking across the country, for a while with Jack Nicholson squeezed on the back of Fonda’s bike.

Those bikes were built by California customizer Ben Hardy from retired Harley-Davidson police cycles. Hardy also built some of the bikes used several years earlier in The Wild Angels, one of a series of drive-in movies based loosely on the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang that helped cement the idea that chopper riders were nonconformists at best, and trouble at worst.

Motorcycle at the Heart of Stopping AIDS Riders responded to comments made by Dr. Brian Williams at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science by pointing out that the lack of reliable vehicles for transporting blood samples over large distances in rural communities is currently one of the biggest barriers to accurate testing for HIV in Africa.

The above news isn’t exactly within our market. This organization supplies motorcycles and the infrastructure to repair and maintain motorcycles in Africa. SUNDAY WRAP UP– So we’re trying to find focus in a world gone bananas, but the notion is working. I’ve made a presentation to the city regarding refurbishing the exterior of the building and the Wilmington City sculpture project. I can take both off my list until I hear from the city of Los Angeles again.

Ace Racer
I’m writing the story about an Ace Racer for American Iron magazine. The bike is an amazing recreation built by a restoration master. Watch for this issue.

We have worked with the H-D factory for ten years, almost weekly, but they don’t see fit to support Bikernet, so we need to support the manufacturers who do. It’s like some of our tenants in this old building. If I’m cool, they take advantage of us, don’t do their chores or pay the rent on time. I hate to be a prick, but if I’m not they take advantage constantly. It’s a bitch. We don’t cut anyone off, we’re cool like that, but we get forced to pull back. I can spend more time on my next book.

spam
Watch for the coverage of the first SPAM run next week.

We should have copies of our new Chance book next week, and I need to spend more time on the second Chance book based on my trip around the world. Cantina member will get to read it first right here.

Here’s another teaser shot of Steve Storz’ latest Sporty, which was recently shot for American Iron.

As of this weekend, I’m starting to work on the Assalt Weapan for Bonneville, while Departure Bike Works is working on the Bonne Belle. You’ll see the reports.

mudflap
Mudflap girl point cover by Michael Boen.

We are going to work with Paughco and Dar at Brass Balls on our FXR Mud Flap girl project. Plus, I have one more item bugging me. It’s a major project, and I’ve never stepped into this creative realm. Over the next couple of months I’m going to study and research writing a screenplay. Can’t say I’m up for it yet, but I’m giving it a shot. This project may take years. You’ll see every step unfold on Bikernet or in the Cantina.

That’s just one of the bitchin’ aspects of this web site. We can bring you reports on anything, anytime, 24/7.

Let’s go for a ride
