After I rode my 2023 FXST Softail for a few weeks, I decided that I need saddlebags. I have a small pouch attached to my front forks where I can fit a small purse, registration and insurance card, but I’m not satisfied with the small pouch because it’s too small. I need to carry.my rain gear and other items, so my hunt for the saddlebags began.
Motorcycle Parts & Accessories | Harley-Davidson USA
I always begin my research with Harley-Davidson by going to their website. That is where I found bags to fit my bike. There were a few different kinds to choose from and I decided on the Detachable Saddlebags

When I clicked on the image of the set, it took me to the actual order page.
I should note that besides having all kinds of information on these bags there was also a section to see if they fit my bike.
Rear Turn Signal/License Plate Relocation Kit - Black 67800830A | Harley-Davidson USA
I read that with this install I was also going to need Softail Turn Signal Relocation Kit #67800830A. Harley Davidson always includes links that inform you of any.other kits you may need for the full installation.
When I received my saddlebags and signal light extensions, I was very pleased with them. I verified all the pieces and parts to the inventory list included with the directions. Then I began to read the directions. Oh boy, I realized the skill level for this install is a 2 out of 4, which meant I was going to need some manpower which calls for my boyfriend Rogue.
Removing Seat
Disconnecting Taillight Wiring
Rogue always suggests reading the instructions and we did, But decided to vary from them slightly. We dodged the difficulty of removing one of the screws from the inside of the fender. I removed the seat and then the wires to the lights.
Removing Fender Struts
I removed the fender support and fender as a unit, placed it on a shop blanket so as not to scratch the paint and removed a fender strut.
Taillight Extension Wire Routing
It was decided to use the factory wiring and not replace them with the wires in the kit. We would add Harley extension harness 69200034 to the original wires under the seat once the fender was re-installed.
Care was taken to run the wires so they would fit correctly in the grove of the struts.
Once the signals were on the struts, they were installed on the fenders using the new docking hardware. The complete assembly was then installed on the motorcycle frame.
Left Lower Docking Point
The left lower docking hardware was then installed and torqued.
Muffler Removed
Right Side Lower Docking Hardware
Torquing Right Side Lower Docking Hardware
The right side of the motorcycle needed the rear muffler removed to install the lower docking point.
I next had to install the lower support arm on the back of each saddlebag which is attached using washers and screws. Once the supports were secure, I then inserted the fork which I just attached over the lower front mini docking point.
Locking Control In The Saddlebag
Warning Lever That The Saddlebag Is NOT Locked
Inside the saddlebag is a knob which I had to pull out and rotate to the unlocked position. I then slid the assembly onto the docking points and locked it into position. The red lever on the back of the saddlebag needs to be down to secure the bag.(locked position). Repeat the same on the other side.
Weight Warning Putting Rain Gear In Saddlebag
My new saddlebags are beautiful, and I’m extremely pleased with the way they look on my bike. They can be easily removed when I want a different look or just riding short distances.
This install has been a great experience for me, and the instruction sheet had all the information where to use blue locking on threads and torque specifications.
I am learning to work on my motorcycle and urge you to consider it yourself. If you have a friend to help great, If Not Bring It To Your Harley Dealer.
