Making Changes on the Road

I have been riding to Sturgis for over 30 years. Back when I was with Easyriders,  I left after work on Friday, rolled onto the interstate, leaned over into the left lane and hit it. During those days I rode a performance-engine, rigid frame, Harley. I actually made it to Sturgis from Florida in two days one year, but ended up sleeping the entire next day. I  changed it to a three-day ride in the future.

Over the year’s motorcycles changed and so did routes, sometimes riding alone, others with friends and family. Recently I've been stopping at attractions I blasted past in previous years. I am more into the ride and the many different routes now and have increased the time on the road. One of my riding partners, BEAT-ON did not make it home from the ride last year. I decided to ride alone this year and do the interstate thing. I carefully laid out my route including stopping to see friends on the way.

I have a check list and added to it over the years, starting with servicing my motorcycle. This year it was my 2009 FLHTC. It got new tires, a brake rotor, brake pads, fluid change etc. I tried out a new helmet from Harley that had speakers in it, phone and GPS playing music. I could add directions through the radio and or the helmet. I thought it was pretty cool. Well, the day before the trip I pulled into the garage listening to music. When I went to run a last-minute errand, the radio quit. After checking, it shorted. Hey, no big deal, I still got the cell phone. Then my hearing aids started acting up. Okay, I do not need a radio anyway. Issues with charging and on and on. No big deal.

Well the big deal turned out to be breaking one of my rules about not being out in the sun during the hottest part of the day. That didn’t work out either. I got a late start and it was hot. I tried staying hydrated and not doing a good job, so ended up in a truck stop to eat and cool off.

I usually like to fill up and ride until I need fuel, rehydrate and get back on the road. I had to change that to stop when I needed to hydrate no matter how much fuel I had. Changes, making changes is sometimes hard for an old man, who has been doing things the same way for a long time.

Other than being HOT the ride was going well, and I made it to my friend Chris' house in Stuart, IA

Even though I had told myself I was not going to take the fairing off to fix the charging port, I did. After a good night’s sleep, it was off to Deadwood and stop in to see Bandit at his new place. It was a dump, don't go there. I also got some new business cards. We have been doing Bikernet together for 25 years.

Then it I rolled to Tim and Helen's house in St.Onge. It was cool, unlike Bandit's heap.

There is so much to see and do in Sturgis and the Black Hills, one needs to choose wisely. Well we decided to go to Michael Lichter’s show at the Buffalo Chip you can see the article on that at https://www.bikernet.com/pages/MORE_METTLE_MOTORCYCLES_AND_ART_THAT_NEVER_QUIT.aspx  and then the Hall Of Fame Breakfast on   - I will get that article done as soon as I can.

Well, we did go downtown to check in at HOG and see what was going on. We also hit few other places. It was damn hot and crowded, so we didn't last long.

The plan is to always get some riding in and we did that. Fire Dept breakfast in Nemo is definitely on the list and a ride to Wyoming to the Buckhorn for lunch. Stopped in Sundance to pick up a poker chip at Deluxe H-D.

Rapid City to see a friend from Melbourne, Fl now living there and of course Black Hills HD to see some of my vendor friends.

Rode out to the Stone House Saloon as it is something we have been doing for years. Ended up putting Beat-on’s name on the wall for those remembered. I like this place.

It was an interesting week and more relaxing than some in the past. It was finally time to head home.

An early start and made it to Chris’s house, got a good night’s sleep and then on to La Vergne TN. Things got weird. I took my helmet off and put my hearing aids in so that I could hear while signing in. When I came out and started the bike it sounded loud, like valve train noise. I was so tired I secured the bike and went to bed. Woke up during the night and decided to post on Facebook to see if anyone with a trailer was coming through the area. Went back to bed and when I checked Facebook and messages in the morning there were a lot of people willing to help.

This is what the Motorcycle Brotherhood is about and it is alive and well. Thanks to all who offered help.

When I posted I was just thinking about getting home without doing any damage to the engine. One of the messages was from my Brother Berry Wardlaw saying he was sending Doc Flynn to get me.

Got to Accurate Engineering and could not duplicate the sound in the engine. Did find a couple of other rattles and issues which were corrected. Not sure what I heard or why But all agree better safe than sorry.

Stayed a couple of days and got other things done, left Thursday morning and got home that night. The motorcycle ran well and the only oops was the shift linkage came off as I was exiting I-95. I was able to get it back on and into 3rd gear to ride home. It has been repaired and motorcycle is being cleaned and serviced.

Well it turned out to be an interesting trip of 4611 miles. Less than previous years and different issues But some Good Times and Good Stories To Tell.

If you went to Sturgis, I hope you had a good time, if you didn’t think about doing it in the future.
