From 1972 to 1980 Harley-Davidson built a dual- carbureted 750 Sportster flat track racing model. The style and design became a hallmark of Sportster performance. The XR 750 engines are still available from the factory, but the overall chassis was long gone until Steve Storz revived it in 1990. Over the years, he's developed various versions and modifications, the latest being a version for the 2004 and up rubber-mounted Sportster. Steve set up his catalog to offer a myriad of components that allow any builders to make as few or as many Sportster mods as they would like. Many builders retain the stock Sportster tank or switch tanks and leave the rear fender alone. Below you'll see the entire line-up of parts available from Storz to create the Storz Performance Conversion. "I can't say XR 1200 anymore, due to my agreement with the factory," Steve said, "so I call all my efforts Storz Performance Conversions." Below, you will see the H-D/Storz agreement release and lots of info on various Sportster conversion installation instructions. In the near future, we will back this tech up with the Storz Performance front end installation. Hang on. Steve's conversions are ready for Ironhead Sportsters right up to the latest fuel-injected, rubber-mounted models. Sportsters are actually amazing motorcycles. It's the least expensive model and takes the least amount of upgrades for the hot rod experience. "You don't need to do anything aside from changing the pipes we designed with Bubbs and switching the air cleaner," Steve said. "The new closed-loop stock EFI system will adapt to the changes." The 1200 custom models come equipped with hot rod cams. AT-1200 Gas Tank Mounting Instructions for 2004/06 883&1200 Sportster NOTE: Installation of this tank requires relocation of the ignition key switch, & ignition coil, and choke cable. New mounting brackets for these items are included. You must install the tank for a test fitting before painting it. Remove stock gas tank. Remove the bracket that holds the ignition switch and coil. Use an electric drill with a 3/8” diameter bit (or letter “V” drill) to clean the inside of the front tank mounting tube, which is welded to the frame. Install the ignition coil using the new mounting bracket. Install the ignition switch in new location on the top motor mount. Re-route wiring as required. A steel sleeve tube is provided to reduce the diameter of the front tank mounting hole to 5/16” diameter. Using some light grease or anti-seize compound on the outside diameter of the sleeve tube and carefully tap the sleeve tube into the frame. You should not have to use much force.
Now install the front rubber tank mounts by threading them onto the 5/16” threaded stud that goes through the front frame tube mount. Note: It may be necessary to use shim washers behind the threaded rubber mounts to prevent any side-to-side movement at the front of the gas tank. Because the tanks are handmade, each tank must be fitted individually. Install the Pingel petcock(not included) into the tank using Loctite Pipe Thread Sealant #567. Install rubber insulating strip onto top of frame tube, or this rubber strip may be glued to the underside of the tank tunnel.
NOTE: For EFI models install the fuel pump from the stock tank.
Use some Vaseline or light grease on the front mounting rubbers and on the pockets in the tank before carefully sliding the tank in place. Check to be sure that there is no metal-to- metal contact with the tank or interference with the frame or engine which could cause the tank to crack. Install the rear tank mounting bracket using the stud and jam nuts provided. Use some light grease or Vaseline on the rear tank mounting rubber grommet also. The rear tank bracket is a snug fit onto the frame lug and it may be necessary to file any excessive paint from the sides and top of the frame lug. When the bracket is in place, push down on the front edge of the bracket and tighten the right hand jam nut to secure the tank mount. Do not overfill the tank, leave some airspace below the vented tank cap. Make sure the inside of the tank is cleaned before use. Avoid excessive sanding or polishing that could weaken the tank. A seat mounting subframe kit provides attachment points for the seat base, stainless steel license plate holder, and taillight, which are included in the kit along with complete instructions and mounting hardware. FGL-255 Fiberglass Seat base and Seat pad $357.00 ML-051-04 Seat Mounting Subframe Kit $355.00
Instructions for Chain Drive Conversion for 2004-5 883-1200 Sportsters NOTE: This kit is intended for use only with Storz XR Style Seat (FGL-250) and subframe ML-051-94 only. It will not work with the stock Sportster rear fender.
Replace transmission drive belt drive pulley with new 520 countershaft sprocket. Install rear 520 chain drive sprocket and sprocket spacer on a Harley-Davidson rear hub p/n 40976- 00 (wire spoke style hub). Using a Metzeler 180/55-18 rear tire on an 18 x 5.5” rim, the rear wheel and tire must be perfectly centered between the fender support rails to maintain clearance between the edge of the tire and the fender support rails when the rear suspension is compressed. The right side rear axle spacer should be approximately 1.360” wide. This dimension may vary slightly between individual bikes.
Remove one shock completely, and remove the spring from the other shock so that you can move the rear wheel through it’s full travel to check for tire clearance. Use Blue Loctite #242 on rear sprocket bolts.
