Illusion Motorcycles were the original manufactured custom motorcycle and they're still rockin'. If any custom bike company is an entity to watch over the next couple of years Illusion might be the one.
"We're trying to stay safe in this economy," said Rusty Coones, the president. "We don't want production to exceed our demands."
Rusty and his partners, which includes the mad doctor Bill McCahill of Spyke, Compu-fire and STD, and a financial group from Australia, spent the last couple of years placing their ducks firmly in a row. They are manufacturing the first engines that are CARB (California) and EPA-approved. They thoroughly tested their entire drivelines and performance-based "Bar" transmissions.
Their engines range from 80 cubic inches to 114, with dual plugs, manual and electronic compression releases and Mikuni 42 millimeter carburetors. The transmissions are supported with steel bars and bearings, not bushings, and are available in right or left-side drive configurations with belt pulleys or chain sprockets.
This year, they will initiate sales with a strong dealer program, engine, transmission and complete EPA-approved drivelines. In addition sales will include chassis kits, with and without drivelines. The extensive motorcycle menu will also contain a bobber line beginning at, $17,000 and rolling to $19,000 for complete custom bikes. And finally the Chef's special is this bike, the Illusion Hellrazor, the five WCC signature series bikes a month using Jesse James chassis components.
Jesse and Rusty go way back when Jesse helped Rusty through a tough time and gave him killer deals on fenders to help him grow his business. In 2001 they collaborated on chassis components.
Jesse currently has two chassis kits available through Custom Chrome, a 140, 180 and 200 CFL, so he devised this 250 kit for the Illusion line. The component package includes the CFL frame, bear claw controls, fenders, tank, gas cap, WCC emblazoned oil bag, WCC brass neck badge and billet frame badges, spider web fender struts, rear axle, laser-cut battery tray, motor mount and an ignition switch housing that also holds the coil.
Illusion components include the entire EPA-approved driveline, their signature series, tested air cleaner, primary drive, 10-gauge seat pan, tried and true seat shocks, glide front end, black box wiring system, charging and starting by Spyke and Compu-Fire and wiring by Pops. Compu-Fire is also responsible for the coil and dual-fire ignition. Engines can be ordered in the following sizes: 80, 88, 92, 97, 100, 107, and 114. In every case a H-D proven 4.24 stroke bottom end is mated to a variety of bores from 3.5 to 4.20 inches and fastened to high-performance heads.
Note: In the near future we will feature Illusion's entire range of new engine packages. Exciting configurations coming that mate Panheads and Shovel styles to Evo lowers.
Although each WCC/Illusion Hellrazor contains the same components with a variety of engine and trans configurations, the man, Pete, who paints most of Jesse's bikes, individually paints them. Every Hellrazor is hand-built at the Illusion factory in Southern California by Rusty, T-Rod, and their crew of experienced bikers. Mark, who 3D cuts some of the Renegade line, makes the top-of-the line wheels. "One set of wheels takes 160 hours of CNC time," Rusty said. "Spoke wheels are also available."
The air box was designed by Ryan Tovatt and includes gravity-fed air flaps. It is completely sealed EPA-tested and connected to a CARB-approved charcoal canister. The pipes are made by WCC and coupled with a SuperTrapp universal muffler with adjustable diffuser plates. The deflector shield, to keep exhaust away from the bike, was designed by Illusion.
"The more plate you run the more open the exhaust," Rusty said. "Each engine carries a .520 lift cam and they're so fast you wouldn't know it was EPA-approved."
Only Brembo brakes are used in conjunction with Brembo hand controls. "We use Harley-Davidson switch housings and batteries," Rusty said. "They always fit and are reliable." Illusion designed the mirror clamp to fit between the Brembo controls and factory switch housings.
Chris from Illusion hand-tools every seat and the transmission is coupled from the Prowler Clutch to the laser-cut spider web rear sprocket by a 530 O-ring chain. BDL supplies the primary belts. The Illusion Hellrazor is a serious hot rod from the original Illusion name hitting the road with state of the art components and a WCC Chopper American-made chassis. It runs retail about $49,900 and they're available now.
