A Screamin' Eagle Oil Cooler And Light Suggestions

King tech

Photos and text by Pablo

On page 19 of the H-D 2002 Holiday Guide check out the touring oil cooler kit!!!! This taken on the '03 Screamin Eagle Road King.

I'm sending pic's of it on the bike and some with the engine out of the bike. Also pic on some docking hardware, sissy bar, removable tour pak.

The last pic is of the rear T/S housing for the '03 S.E. Road King. You can use these for front T/S with the passing lamps and light bar. You have to gut the 2 wire shit out of and install the 3 wire front light stuff in the housing.

Then you run the wiring exactly like you would on the old round style front T/S lights. They mount right on the front T/S mounting perch that comes with the passing lamp accessory kit.

I did this on a 03 Fatboy where the customer wanted passing lamps installed. By doing this I was able to match the new style rear T/S on the Softail models. This kept the wiring like stock, for me. For the customer it made him happy big time. I think it work's out pretty good.

What do you think??

Bikernet: I was a tad lost on some of these suggestion, so natch, I was forced to ask the stupid questions: What's the difference in this oil cooler than the one listed in the P&A catalog?

Pable: The difference is you lose all the extra hose and putting the thermostat under the frame between the engine and the frame. That's why I sent the shots of the S.E. Road King showing the lack of oil lines/Thermo. from underneath.

The down side is the cost. It's about 400.00 retail. But what the fuck it cleans up oil cooler system big time. Very Sano.

Bikernet: What are passing lamps, turn signals, spot lights? Or is that just the name of these more teardrop looking puppies?

Pablo: Okay lame-O, passing lamps/Spot light's are those round fuckers on either side of the head light with the light bar. The teardrop light housing's are Softail stuff. The S.E. Road King uses them on the rear only like in the pic I sent.

Bikernet: I'm interested in taking the spot lights off the Road King. Where could I move the turn signals or should I just eliminate the front ones? I'm going to install highbars, then strip this sucker down and get ready for powdercoating.

Pablo: You could use Softail front T/S lights (teardrop style) on the switch housings with the Apes. Run the T/S wires along with the switch housing wires through the bars for the clean look. It will be very tight and a pain in the ass but it cleans up the bars real good. Them fat bars make it easier to run the wires by the way.

Bikernet: Your shots are fantastic. Are you telling me that to run those Passing lights I need to change the circuitry in the lamps?

Pablo: No damnit, the passing lamps stay the same. They are the big round things that have been around for years. It's the Turn signal lights' I'm talking about. You use the rear S.E. bullet type turn signal light's under the passing lamps on a Softail.

You could mount the S.E. rear turn signal light bar on your Road King. Then you could also mount a set of rear S.E. turn signal lights under your passing lamps for the front turn signal light's

You have to change the 2 wire single element in the rear turn signal housing to the 3 wire dual element to run flasher and running light's on those turn signal housing's.

I wish I would have shot a damn picture of the Fat Boy I did that on. I worked out really well.

Bikernet: I like the cleanliness of the SE unit. Must be easier to work on because of the lack of black.

Pablo: It's really about the same. The paint does show all the weld's on the frame. Wouldn't be a big deal if they Heli-Arc the frames. Fat chance of that!!!
