I am grappling through a long-term product evaluation of River Road brand chaps for Bikernet.com as part of the 5-Ball Racing Team. I feel I’m becoming the “butt” of jokes around the editorial offices. I also seem to hear the clicking of camera shutters behind my back at unexpected times, usually when in the company of Sailor Sherry, the local wharf peasant who is too cute to ignore.

Am I being paranoid? We'll see as this review goes to print. Enough chatter, on with the detailed review. Can I have another pot of Sailor Jerry rum?

I have a 30-inch waist and 32-inch inseam so I selected size small. These fit very comfortably, neither too tight, nor too loose, with good freedom of movement to boot.

The first thing I noticed upon receiving the River Road chaps was the seam hems were given the sort of styling treatment that makes them appear slightly worn, a little broken in, something along the lines of pre-washed or pre-stressed denims. Of course River Road builds this model into the line of four variations: the Drifter in distressed brown, the Rambler in distressed black (these), the Moto with more pockets, and Plain in slick black.

Although, I have to admit distressed is a sharp styling approach in perfect alignment with my rough and rugged fashion statement, River Road need not to have gone to an extra effort, because I am notoriously hard on any leather garments and like to break them in fast. I’ve tossed some leathers down the race track at 85 to 90 mph and in the case of a well-known brand, once at 110 mph and another time at 145 mph. Ah, my road racing days. This tends to give them an immediate well broken-in look, along with some serious street credibility.

"Ah, but Dr. Feng," you say, “those were race leathers and these are stylish street chaps, designed to keep the bugs off, and wind, light rain and mild cold at bay.” Apples and oranges you say. And you would be correct. But keep in mind I’m on your side, testing this product for you, the valued reader, to give you an idea of where your hard-earned ducats, buckaroos, sheckles, dollarinies may be going in the near future.

I wear these bastards all day everyday. I ride to work, ride to shopping, go on road trips, attend biker events, you name it. I ride in the rain, in the blistering heat, in the freezing night cold, on paved roads, dirt roads, crappy roads, bad alleys, very fast, in congestion, under the influence, horny for female contact, or hungry for a steak while scanning the harbor.

It doesn’t stop there in my search for pure nirvana and the leather truth of value and quality in the River Road line of chaps. I am pre-testing for you in every conceivable application and under a variety of conditions. I wear them to work, while I’m welding. They are constantly showered with sparks on a daily basis and sometimes get brushed with the flame of a cutting torch. They are abused by being covered in drilling mud, sometimes mixed with harsh chemicals, as I’m cutting and welding while laying on the soggy ground and working under a drilling rig.

The lengths I go to for Biker’s Choice and Bikernet readers are unbelievable. I work on the docks, work in the Bikernet headquarters, and work on cars, all the while wearing these chaps. I wear them chasing women and rum, or even cold pizza. I wear them to high level business meetings, low-life bars, and during 5-Ball racing meetings. The heavy zippers never fail and the snaps never pop. Will I throw them down the road at speed on my 650 V-Twin ATK, with my body strapped inside for the ultimate test. Hopefully not. I have to draw the line in the oily sand at my feet. Am I impressed with these River Road chaps? Doubly so! I simply wipe them down with a damp cloth and they look great again. They have not stretched out of shape, like some other chaps I tested in the past, possibly because of the quality of the buffalo leather.

The thick but succulent leather leads me to the quality stitching tightly meshed and rolled over into a double stitched pattern, great for holding leather chunks together for the long haul in the event of a brush with abrasive asphalt. Amazingly the stitching, despite being constantly showered with welding and grinding sparks and slag, have actually out-lasted the stitching on my work boots and two pairs of welding gloves. So yes, I’m impressed.

I doubt most folks would put them through anywhere near this level of abuse. Maybe you will be impressed too. Plus they have stylized motorcycle-embossed caps on the leg snaps. How cool is that?

What jacket are you wearing in the pictures? Can you really ride it on your bike comfortably and are you concerned at all about it getting stuck in the chain?

Editor Response I reached out to Dr. Feng. He said, "Goodwill."

There you have it.

Going the extra 10 miles for sure. If they can hold up thru all that and still look so badass, they are worth a look see.

Editor Response Thanks. I'll bet he's wearing them on a welding job right now. Dr. Feng is nuts.
