We just wrapped up the show goddamn extravaganza weekend.
That means the shows are now spreading across the nation, so look out. It was an action-packed weekend with a party at the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarters, with builders and movers and shakers from our industry, plus a couple of TV producers.
It’s all nuts, but good. So much is happening and the mantra for next year is to slow down, focus on book writing, Bikernet, and one super special Bonneville project build. But everyday a new opportunity springs to the surface.
This collection feature is coming to Bikernet soon.
A brother said recently, “It’s all about survival.” Here’s a link to our most popular Ultimate Builder show t-shirt:

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY WRITER’S CAVE VOCABULARY LESSON--
anopisthograph \an-uh-PIS-thuh-graf\, noun:
Manuscript, parchment, or book having writing on only one side of the leaves.
But it never comes to this, the events always end up on the public side of the anopisthograph.
-- Kerry Shawn Keys, A Gathering of Smoke
If text was written on one side only, then the roll was known as an anopisthograph; if on both sides, then as an opisthograph.
-- Roy Stokes, edited by R. Stephen Almagno, Esdaile's Manual of Bibliography
Anopisthograph comes from three Greek roots. It first gained popularity in the 1870s, merging an-, meaning 'un-' or 'not,' with opistho for 'back' referring to writing on both sides of a leaf or page, and 'graph' from -graphos, meaning 'drawn' or 'written.
BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT--
Federal Court Strikes down Illinois' total ban on carrying firearms for self-defense outside the home or business.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled today that Illinois' total ban on carrying firearms for self-defense outside the home or business is unconstitutional. The case involves lead plaintiff Mary Shepard, an Illinois resident and a trained gun owner, who is licensed to carry a concealed handgun in both Utah and Florida. The National Rifle Association is funding this case. The Illinois State Rifle Association is a co-plaintiff in this case.
Today’s ruling is a victory for all law abiding citizens in Illinois and gun owners throughout the country, said Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of NRA. The court recognized that the text and history of the Second Amendment guarantee individuals the right to carry firearms outside the home for self-defense and other lawful purposes. In light of this ruling, Mary Shepard and the people of Illinois will finally be able to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
On September 28, 2009, while working as the treasurer of her church, Ms. Shepard and an 83-year-old co-worker were viciously attacked and beaten by a six-foot-three-inch, 245 pound man with a violent past and a criminal record. Ms. Shepard and her co-worker were lucky to survive, as each of them suffered major injuries to the head, neck and upper body. Ms. Shepard's injuries required extensive surgeries and she continues physical therapy to this day attempting to recover from her injuries.
In today’s decision, Judge Richard Posner ruled that Illinois’ ban on carriage is unconstitutional. The Judge went on to say, “One doesn’t have to be a historian to realize that a right to keep and bear arms for personal self-defense in the eighteenth century could not rationally have been limited to the home. . . . Twenty-first century Illinois has no hostile Indians. But a Chicagoan is a good deal more likely to be attacked on a sidewalk than in his apartment on the 35th floor.”
"Today's ruling is a major victory for law-abiding Illinoisans and for everyone who understands that the Second Amendment protects the right both to keep arms, and to bear arms," added Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA's Institute for Legislative Action. "This ruling makes clear that Illinois cannot deny law-abiding residents the right to carry a firearm for self-defense outside the home. This is a step in the right direction for all gun owners. We know it probably won’t be the end of this case, and we’re ready to keep fighting until the courts fully protect the entire Second Amendment."
STORY CORRECTION AND NEW STORY CONSIDERATION FROM BIKERNET DESERT TARANTULA EDITOR--
The girlfriend is Stacy not Celia, whom you met in Vegas a couple of years ago. She used to be an international fashion model. It's really more of a skill than people think, and she's been great at posing for bike features, destination stories, apparel, and the new Travel tips feature where you got her name all wrong. She makes my photos look good.
She also comes up with a lot of very creative story ideas, including profiling Doc Hendley, a CNN Hero of the Year recipient and a hardcore biker. He launched a humanitarian movement called Wine To Water, digging and fixing fresh water wells around the impoverished world. You would be amazed how many millions of people go without adequate water supplies, and how loathsomely politicized that's become. Basically, the guys goes into third world war zones, dodges bullets, builds wells, rides Harleys hellbent for leather. His organization is www.winetowater.org
Hendley recently wrote a book about his evolution from bartender and itinerant biker to international humanitarian. This would be a great story for Bikernet. Would you like a story?
We will submit this story consideration to the Bikernet Editorial Committee, then the Bikernet Finance and Budget Board, then Legal. Any good editorial notion always stops at Legal. They hold it up for a couple of months while billing us for every discussion. Fuck it, let’s just do it.--Bandit

-Four Unhealthy Holiday Drinks
During the holidays, parties and gatherings are sure to be part of your social calendar. As you make the rounds, you can help reduce your intake of empty calories by being aware of unhealthy drinks that are popular at this time and minimizing your overall alcohol consumption during the holiday season.
1. Eggnog: Made with milk, cream, sugar and eggs, eggnog can pack up to 460 calories in an eight-ounce serving - not including calories from alcohol. Think of it as an indulgent dessert and limit yourself during the holidays; sip it slowly to savor the taste.
2. White Russians. The added sugars in this cream-and-Kahlua concoction can have as much as 460 calories in an eight-ounce serving.
3. Hot Buttered Rum. Hot melted butter, rum and brown sugar make this holiday classic top out at around 350 calories per eight-ounce serving.
4. Tom and Jerry. A "hot-rod" version of eggnog, this combination of eggs, milk, rum and spices often has between 340 and 460 calories per eight-ounce serving.

moor \moor\, verb:
1. To fix firmly; secure.
2. To secure (a ship, boat, dirigible, etc.) in a particular place, as by cables and anchors or by lines.
3. To moor a ship, small boat, etc.
4. To be made secure by cables or the like.
noun: 1. The act of mooring.
Being anxious to remove some of our goods before night, the boys ran off to fetch the sledge; while I, having no anchor, contrived to moor the boats by means of some of the heavy blocks of iron we had brought.
-- Johann David Wyss, The Swiss Family Robinson
Then the divers will moor it to the bottom — we drove the piles into the ocean floor 20 meters deep when we did the 63.
-- Eugene McCreary, Madame President
Though moor gained popularity in the 1490s, the term originates from the Old English more from the maerelsrap rope used for securing or 'mooring' ships.

RIVERA PRIMO to exhibit at the all new BIG BIKE EUROPE
parts, performance and custom expo in May 2013--RIVERA PRIMO, the California based performance parts distributor and belt drives to clutch manufacturer is to exhibit at BIG BIKE EUROPE in 2013.
Celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2013, Executive Director, and well known custom parts industry veteran Ben Kudon, said that "we are excited about the opportunity that Big Bike Europe will provide for meeting our European distributors, their dealers and the riders who enjoy our products."
"Down the years we have found that riders in Europe appreciate and respect our brand and products, and have a high level of technical appreciation when it comes to getting the best performance and handling from their motorcycles.
At a time of flux in the motorcycle industry expo scene, we think that the focus of BIG BIKE EUROPE on such riders and their dealers represents a vibrant new approach, one with great potential."
BIG BIKE EUROPE is an all-new, non-selling 'Pro-Grade' expo concept for the motorcycle industry in Europe, with the primary focus being on parts, accessories, custom, performance, service, workshop and tuning.
BIG BIKE EUROPE is the new, permanent host event for the acclaimed AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building (2013 will see the World Championship mark its 10th anniversary and first ever appearance in Europe), and will stage the first annual International Motorcycle/Custom Industry Conference.
BIG BIKE EUROPE will be a three-day expo, offering exhibitors an all-new Invitational/Open-Admittance attendance strategy.
The first day (Friday May 10th, 2013) is an "Invitation Only" day set aside for motorcycle dealers, custom shops, custom motorcycle builders and customizers and their invited 'VIP Riders'.
The weekend (Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th) is open to general public, rider and enthusiast attendance.
It is estimated that some two thirds of the value of the European motorcycle market resides with the owners of Europe's 'Big Bikes' - the one-third of motorcycles of over 250cc (source: ACEM).
In addition to a local population of some 18 million "high percentage motorcycle ownership" consumers within a 100km radius of Essen, Germany (where BIG BIKE EUROPE is being staged), research suggests that some 60 plus percent of Europe's franchised motorcycle dealers and custom shops are within a three or four hour ride of Essen; with some 65 percent plus of Europe's large displacement road-registered motorcycles of all kinds, including Harleys, being within a 400 to 500 km radius of the venue (sources: International Motorcycle Industry Index, Moto Big Book, AMD Magazine, International Dealer News).

RUSTY ON SONS OF ANARCHY--
Biker's 'Sons of Anarchy' appearance isn't an act—By Susan Carpenter
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
Rusty Coones has lived what could easily be a "Sons of Anarchy" plot line.
A tower of a man with tattooed arms jutting from his sides like turrets, Coones is a longstanding Hells Angel and bike builder who owns Illusion Motorsports in Westminster – a custom shop that specializes in burly black bikes that would be right at home on the hit FX show that re-imagines "Hamlet" with a gun-running motorcycle club doling out eye-for-an-eye justice in a small California town.
With recent appearances on "Sons of Anarchy" and bikes he's built for the show's creator, Coones blurs the line between reality and fiction. In two episodes leading up to Tuesday's grisly season finale, Coones played Quinn, president of a Sons of Anarchy Nomads charter, riding one of his own Illusion customs. Coones says he'll be back on "Sons" next season in the role that has him playing himself, essentially. In real life, he was president of the Angels' San Fernando Valley and Orange County chapters.
It's well-known that "Sons of Anarchy" creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter regularly consults with the Hells Angels to ensure the show's authenticity. Coones first met Sutter when show creator and lead actor Charlie Hunnam came to an open house at the Illusion shop in 2008, after which he was asked to build a custom bike that was featured in the DVD extras for the show's third season and later auctioned for charity.
Sutter then commissioned an Illusion bike of his own: A Hellrazor that is, like all Illusion customs, black, with chromed parts that appear to have been shot through with bullets.
Sutter's involvement with Coones didn't stop there. Sutter featured three songs from Coones' rock-metal band Attika 7 in the FX show and eventually cast the 6-foot, 5-inch bike builder to appear on screen.
Coones has been in prison twice – first for drugs and guns and later for conspiracy to distribute an illicit chemical used to make methamphetamine. A central California native, he bought Illusion Motorsports in 1999 but was arrested on a drug-conspiracy charge a few months later. While he was in federal prison, his wife Katherine ran the business "so Rusty would come home to a purpose," she said.
After almost six years of "bad food, bad company and a bad time," Coones said, he came home to the purpose of his shop, only to ride head on into the worst economy in decades.
"Right when I got back, I had all these high hopes of resurrecting Illusion. I thought we could get a dealer network going. And every step of the way we ran into problems because everything was collapsing as we were trying to come up," said Coones, who, like his bikes, is clad entirely in black.
"Sons of Anarchy," it seems, came along at just the right time.
"This whole 'Sons of Anarchy' connection is a plus for anybody," said Coones, who is working on four different bike projects, including an $80,000 Hellrazor bagger that tips the scales at 850 pounds and is distinguished by an enormous 26-inch front wheel. Coones is also in the earliest stages of developing his own reality TV program.
"Any time you're associated with a show with over 5 million viewers, it will legitimize you – even when you're somebody like me who's been in prison several times and happens to be a Hells Angel."
NEW POPULAR WOMEN’S JACKET REVIEWED ON WOMEN RIDERS NOW--
The Maven is a lightweight leather riding jacket constructed of 1.1mm/1.3mm top-grain cowhide that’s pre-oiled, washed, and then hand-finished with oil again.
I love the aged finish, which has a moderate amount of "crinkly-ness" that makes the jacket soft and easy to wear. It's a new women's jacket by Roland Sands and the girl wearing the jacket in the photo is very cute, for your readers:

THIS JUST IN FROM THE BIKERNET UNIVERSITY SCIENCE DEPARTMENT--
A professor was giving a lecture on Paranormal Studies.
To get a feel for his audience, he asks, 'How many people here believe in ghosts?'
About 90 students raise their hands.
Well, that's a good start. Out of those who believe in ghosts, do any of you think you have seen a ghost?'
About 40 students raise their hands.
That's really good. I'm really glad you take this seriously. Has anyone here ever talked to a ghost?'
About 15 students raise their hand.
Has anyone here ever touched a ghost?'
Three students raise their hands.
That's fantastic. Now let me ask you one question further...Have any of you ever made love to a ghost?'
Way in the back, Ahmed raises his hand.
The professor takes off his glasses and says 'Son, all the years I've been giving this lecture, no one has ever claimed to have made love to a ghost. You've got to come up here and tell us about your experience.'
The Middle Eastern Muslim student replied with a nod and a grin, and began to make his way up to the podium.
When he reached the front of the room, the professor asks, 'So, Ahmed, tell us what it's like to have sex with a ghost?'
Ahmed replied, "From way back there I thought you said goats.

MARKET REPORT FROM THE MIC--
Attached is the latest MIC Flash Report for overall motorcycle sales... figure Harley has historically had 60% of the On-Highway sales total as a starting point.
Unfortunately MIC only tracks new unit sales do they only offer a guesstimate of used motorcycles sold at the dealership level. To get a better handle on how many used Harleys are sold, I would start with the folks at National Powersport Auctions who have a pretty good handle on the used market (more than 70% of motorcycle sales in the U.S. are still driveway-to-driveway rather than through a franchised dealership or legit used shop). There are an estimated 8.8 million motorcycles in use on the street (with another 3.3 million off-highway motorcycles in use).
Speaking of dealership transactions, MIC says 41% are franchised dealers 59% are service/accessory/aftermarket shops. Sales by the franchised new vehicle retailers accounted for $10 Billion in total sales volume, non-aligned accessory shops generated an additional $1.3 billion (total value of the U.S. motorcycle market is roughly $11.4 billion).
Of this $11.4 billion total, $6.5 billion/58% of the total was generated by the sale of new motorcycles, the rest was generated by parts/accessories/apparel ($2.5 billion/21.7% of the total). Service/labor generates right around $800 million (7%). "Other" motorcycle related sales account for a little more than $200 million (1.8%).
Check Harley's 10k report for how much money MotorClothes and Genuine Parts generate and add the Indian/Victory PG&A numbers in and you will have a rough idea of the scope of the V-Twin OEM accessory sales. They have all this detailed in their annual stock market reports and it is public information... I just don't know where my copies are.
The bad news is that Bikers Choice and Drag Specialties are not so forthcoming in how much aftermarket revenue they are generating. And again, MIC doesn't track aftermarket accessory sales well enough to hazard a guess
