Sturgis Bike Week. From custom bikes to live music, little is left to the imagination. There are plenty of things to see and do in Sturgis during Bike Week. But the road offers so much more.
Here are the ten places you won’t want to miss out on while you’re in South Dakota.
Less Than One Hour Away

1. Deadwood SD
Deadwood is a 20 minute ride west of Sturgis on US-14 ALT. A popular destination during Bike Week, there is plenty to see and do in Deadwood. Don’t forget to visit Mount Moriah Cemetery. There you will find grave sites of many old west legends, including Wild Bill Hickok.

2. Bear Butte State Park
At  some point during your trip you might want to “get away from it all.” Your answer is a short ride east, to the Bear Butte State Park. A spiritual destination for many, the park is a holy site for Native Americans.
More Miles, But Worth It

3. Devils Tower National MonumentDevils Tower National Monument
Devils Tower is America’s first national monument. A world class climbing destination, the park is also a great place for hiking. More likely, you’ll want to make this a stop during a day of riding. Arrive before 11 am or after 4 pm to avoid parking challenges!

4. Spearfish Canyon
Riding out to Devils Tower? Consider taking a slight detour off I-90 through Spearfish Canyon. The canyon twists through a 19-mile gorge with plenty of photo opportunities.

5. Badlands National Park
The Badlands National Park is located 90 miles southeast of Sturgis. The Badlands covers 100 square miles and offers a great day of scenic riding. The park is also the site of the massacre of Plains Indians at Wounded Knee Creek.

6. Pactola Lake
Less than an hour from Sturgis, Pactola Lake is the largest reservoir in the Black Hills. If you’re looking for a place to relax, the lake is the place for you. Pactola Lake offers boating, fishing, and swimming; and plenty of scenic riding.
Make a Day of It
Four of our ten recommendations are within an easy ride from each other

7. Custer State Park
Custer State Park is South Dakota’s first, and largest, state park. The 71,000 acre park is home to many wild animals, including 1500 free roaming bison. If you go, keep your eyes open for the begging burros. These donkeys will stop vehicles to beg for food!

8. Needles Highway (SD Highway 87)
Before it was built in 1922, Needles Highway was considered “impossible to complete.” A National Scenic Byway, SD Highway 87 runs through Custer State Park. With miles of sharp turns and low tunnels, Needles Highway was built for motorcycling.

9. Iron Mountain Road (SD Highway 16A)
On one end of Iron Mountain Road there’s Mount Rushmore. On the other, Custer State Park. If you need other reasons for making the 17-mile journey, consider these – 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 pigtails and 3 tunnels.

10. Mount Rushmore
Ride During Sturgis Bike WeekI’m sure there are people who have been to Sturgis Bike Week without seeing Mount Rushmore. Don’t be one of them! Take a day. Go for a ride! If you miss any of the other nine rides, do not miss this one.

How could you not include riding to see the Chief Crazy Horse monument in progress. It's many times larger that Mount Rushmore faces and give reverence to the famous Indian chief. I've visited twice over the years to see progress by the family of one of the original carvers/artists of Rushmore with this work.

Fantastic and worth the trip!!
