Indexing the cam. That’s a phrase that most of us, outside of the real hot rod shops
never hear. What is it? It’s the procedure that positively aligns the cam and drive gear
so that when they are pressed together the timing mark precisely locates the cam at top
dead center. This provides for exact timing, and is critical for high performance racing
engines. Why haven’t most of us heard of it? Because it’s hard to do, and unless you’ve
got years of experience you’re better of leaving your cam gear alone. Until now!
JIMS has developed a tool that’ll allow anyone to remove and install cam
gears on any 1970 to ’99 Big Twin with confidence, and, for the professional,
make a difficult job easier. JIMS Cam Gear Installer, Part Number 1290, is made
of the same shop and track tested high strength steel that his other tools are famous for.
The companion tool is the cam gear remover, Part Number 1390,
and is used here to remove the cam gear.
