I was laying in bed
trying to forget it was Monday when the phone wouldn’t stop ringing, no
matter how I tried to ignore it. It was Paul Platt, from JIMS, who immediately
launched into complete description of JIMS new 6-Speed replacement gear
set without taking a breath. After shaking out the weekends cobwebs I figured
I’d better get my dead butt over to JIMS Camarillo headquarters and find
out what was what.
Upon arriving I found
JIMS head wrench, Tom, hard at work installing the 6-Speed into a stock
H-D, so we decided to chronicle the event for you to check out. This install
can be done by any shop, or by a wrench with tranny experience, and JIMS
tools.

JIMS
6-Speed (Photo 1), and every piece in it, is manufactured right there in
JIMS shop. Home grown and quality controlled right from the start. Total
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) production makes for the closest tolerances
in the industry. |
The gear teeth are spun
on a Koepfer Gear Hub with a 7 axis CNC control. The gears are then put
through a vigorous quality control process on another Koepfer machine.
This one checks the profile, lead, pitch measuring and run out. JIMS also
demands the highest quality steel available in the world today, insuring
the finest gearsets available.

We
figured that anyone who felt qualified to do this procedure would already
know to handle the primary case, so we’ll start our work with the primary
disassembled (Photo 2). |

First remove the old
gear set. This starts with the removal of the side door cover, containing
the clutch release mechanism. Then the side door assembly, with the gear
set attached, is pulled (Photo 3), using JIMS 5-Speed Door Puller
Tool # 2283 (Photo 4).
