Biketoberfest 2000: in Daytona Beach is right around the corner (5 days
away). The smell of Biketoberfest is already in the air. Everyone here
is getting ready for the invasion of an estimated 150,000 bikers heading our
way. Biketoberfest is officially 4 days long but did you know that for us
locals... Biketoberfest kind of un-officially begins one weekend earlier,
starting with the Harley-Davidson Seafood Festival, October 13 - 15 then 4
days later, Biketoberfest "officially begins Oct. 19 - 22, 2000. You get
where I'm going with this (this is just my guess)... in the future, as
Biketoberfest grows (and it is growing fast), Harley-Davidson's Seafood
Festival and Biketoberfest will blur together into a 10 day event (same
length of Bike Week). The motorcycle festivities are growing like crazy
here in Daytona Beach. So come on down and join the fun.
BIKETOBERFEST WEATHER:
In the last few days the weather here in Daytona Beach has been absolutely
fabulous and as a bonus, the cold front that came in a week ago has left us
cooled down from the hot muggy Florida temperatures we were having. Yeah, a
huge cold front came through Florida forcing our temperatures to plummet to
the lower to mid 70's (Florida weather humor). It feels great. Great
riding weather. Beautiful clear to partly cloudy blue sunny skies. Keep
you fingers crossed that it stays like this through next Biketoberfest
weekend (5 days away).
As you know, I (Henry Jordan) / BikeWeekReport.com has been included in an
up and coming TV show. I previously reported that The Learning Channel
(TLC) was here during March (Bike Week 2000) and filmed a documentary called
"Anatomy of: Daytona Bike Week" that was suppose to air in August 2000 (but
it didn't). Well, I recently called the show producers in California and
they told me that the show is now with Discovery Channel (owners of TLC) and
they still haven't set an air date, but that they thought it would air
sometime at the end of November or December 2000. They tell me I didn't get
cut and stay on the editor's cutting room floor... I'm still anxious to see
how it turned out. I'll e-mail you when I find out when it airs.
FLORIDA HELMET LAW:
It's not totally gone!!! You can ride without a helmet if you follow a few
simple laws (see my webpage for details):

BIKETOBERFEST
"LOCK IT OR LOSE IT"... HELP STOP MOTORCYCLE THEFT
A special countywide task force spearheaded by the Volusia County Sheriff's
Office will focus on motorcycle thefts during Biketoberfest.
Motorcycle theft is a growing problem, and the sheriff's department intends
to crack down hard on it. Officers will be out in force during
Biketoberfest looking for stolen motorcycles and suspicious activity. They
want to keep these events fun and crime-free for everyone. The Task Force
will be patrolling local hot spots looking for stolen motorcycles and
suspicious activity, such as loitering in a parking lot, tampering with a
bike or a lock, or walking a motorcycle. In 1999, a total of 35
motorcycles were reported stolen during Biketoberfest. And earlier this
year, during Bike Week, another 88 motorcycles were reported stolen
countywide. The losses during the two events exceeded $1.5 million, and the
number of stolen motorcycles combined for both events marked a 44 percent
increase over the previous year.
