INTRODUCTION
Of all the tasks of government, the most basic is to protect its citizens from violence."
-John Foster Dulles
THE FACTS
Violent crimes such as assault, armed robbery, extortion, murder and even political assassination have all become common place in our society. One only has to pick-up a newspaper or turn on the television to know that U.S. citizens abroad are being kidnapped; politicians and religious leaders are being attacked for their views; bankers, financiers and industrialists become targets for disgruntled employees and anti-capitalists; celebrities, entertainers and on-air personalities are harassed and assaulted by deranged fans; our judges and law makers are in fear of their lives from a crazed criminal element; and most public figures are subjected to bizarre and threatening communications.
Closer to home, society is faced with street gangs, serial killers, rapists, stalkers, crack dealers, the criminally insane, drug lords, pimps, perverts, child molesters and extortionists. Now although these various villains may grow from the "bad side of town," they have come to recognize the affluent neighborhoods as easy pickings, and the rich and famous as soft targets. Many individuals in the financial, entertainment and political arenas recognize these threats and have taken steps not to become "victims."
It is a known fact that conventional law enforcement has neither the time, budget, personnel nor expertise to handle many of the threats facing prominent members of our society. The police do their best to respond to the needs of the community, but faced with the current budget cuts, they must now prioritize their responses and cannot be expected to cover any individual twenty-four hours-a-day. Nor are police officers expert in advising the victim or recipient of a threat on the necessary steps to best improve their security.
Out of fear for their personal safety and sheer frustration, many celebrities and have turned to private security as their only alternative. Unfortunately, most private security firms do not have the resources or levels of expertise to handle the complex and sophisticated needs of the rich and famous.
Historically, many private security firms have failed to implement even minimum standards, their personnel being poorly trained, low paid and lacking in almost all the skills required for medium to high threat security assignments. Obvious lack of education, poor physical condition and unprofessional appearance have also added to their unsuitability for, and inability to blend into the sophisticated world of high society or international politics.
The 6' 4", 350 pound weightlifter type bodyguard of the past has no place in the low-key, high-tech, field of modern security and personal protection. Today, a bodyguard or protective detail should be not only skilled in all aspects of threat management and close protection, but must be able to move discreetly within the personal and professional lives of their protectees.
Faced with this gap in the security industry, several highly motivated security professionals, mostly ex-governmental and military personnel, formed protection, hardware and training companies that could meet all the security needs of any American or foreign VIP. These companies take great pride in supplying the best, most professional experts, protection specialists and training in the security field to date. They have earned the respect of not only the financial and entertainment communities but also political groups and federal law enforcement agencies. They are currently redefining the word "bodyguard" and putting not only respect but prestige back into the security industry. The following is an insiders look at the mechanics of these operations.
