Mountin’ the Monster
Hangin’ Avon’s 230 In the Iron

We’ve all seen ‘em. They’re the centerpiece of the most radical customs. We’re talking about those monster Avon 230 tires. They’ve been on most of the custom class winners at all the best shows. Yea, we’ve all seen them, but how’d they get there? What if you wanted to build a scooter using that wide dude and you don’t happen to own a frame shop? Well, Bikernet has your answer! It comes from Rogersville, Tennessee by way of Amen Frames. When we heard that one of California’s new custom shops, Shakedown Street, in Ventura, California, was putting one of these bad boys together, we had to see just how the 230 got married to the frame.

We packed up the Bikernet truck and headed for Ventura and Shakedown Street. The owner is our old friend, and drag racer extraordinaire, Fuzzy Quaranto. If the name’s familiar it may be because you’ve heard it associated with the R&D department of the world famous Jim’s Machine. Anyhow, Fuzzy hooked us up with his custom wrench, Phil Palazzolo, and we got down to business.

In order to give you an idea just how big a 230 is we had Phil line one up next to an Avon 180.

Pretty impressive, huh? The tire is mounted on one of Amen’s nine-inch wide, polished billet wheels, these are supplied as part of Amen’s rolling chassis.

The thing that makes this rear section unique is Amen’s inboard brake and pulley system.

We’ve laid out the basic parts that make up the system here.
